Auburn hosts ‘The Bad Thing’ Ultra Marathon
This past Halloween, the Bad
Thing game to Auburn with lots of
cheering. The Bad Thing wasn’t
some sort of halloween monster, but
rather it was an Ultra Marathon in
which 70 people participated. These
participants ran from Goderich
along the Maitland Trail all the way
into Auburn where the finish line
welcomed them home. Runners
came from as far away as Gatineau,
Quebec.
The Ultra Marathon is the dream
child of Jeremiah Sommer, who said
the name for the race comes from a
very tough hill on the Maitland Trail
called the Bad Thing. He hopes this
event will be an ongoing annual
event. Sommer said he was pleased
with 70 participants. In fact, he said
he had a waiting list of another 20 or
more people wanting to run, but
wanted to limit the number for the
first time. The winner of the 50-
kilometre run was Sean Roper, who
ran it in four hours, 53 minutes and
28 seconds. Stephanie Ryall was the
first female across the line in the 50-
kilometre race in five hours, 23
minutes and 30 seconds. The winner
of the 25-kilometre race was Bob
Miller, who did it in two hours, six
minutes and 21 seconds. Shannon
Carpenter was the first female to
finish the 25-kilometre race in two
hours, 22 minutes and 32 seconds.
