done for that.”
The piece marked a dramatic
change in the subject of Ramsay’s
painting as well. Prior to taking on
machinery, he worked on wildlife
which is another highly detailed
subject matter.
As for the win, Ramsay wasn’t
able to make the opening of the
show on Oct. 18 and he was shocked
when he received the news.
“I was surprised then and I’m still
surprised,” he said.
O’Donnell wasn’t taken aback,
however, saying she knew he would
win.
While the win surprised Ramsay,
he was also startled by the
recognition he received from his
peers.
“I was amazed at the
congratulations I got on Facebook
from the other artists I know,” he
said, indicating that several local
artists, including the 2014 winner
and fellow Blyth artist Kelly
Stevenson had reached out to
applaud his work.
The piece, along with 35 other
pieces from artists across the county
will remain on display until Dec. 20
at the Huron County Museum.
Ramsay’s piece, alongside the
second place “Field of Promises” by
Goderich’s Julie-Anne Lizewski,
were purchased by Huron County
and become part of the Huron
County Art Bank.
The pieces, alongside all other
past winners, will be shown in
various Huron County buildings as
well as on Huron County’s website

North Huron Councillor Bill Knott
feels that some committees of
council, specifically the Blyth
Business Improvement Area (BIA),
need to be reminded of their decision
making rights.
During council’s Oct. 19 meeting,
Knott said he had discovered that the
BIA had borrowed money without
the written consent of council
and said that, according to his
research, the BIA cannot borrow
money without permission from
council.
“I think council has to make it
very clear to the BIA, as well as any
other committees of council, that, if
they wish to borrow money they
need to have permission,” he said.
“Somehow this must be re-inforced.
It isn’t the first time that borrowing
money has come up.”
Knott has not been in attendance
for any BIA meetings since prior to
Streetfest, so he was unaware of the
situation until now.
Knott claimed that this has come
up before and he had told the
committee it wasn’t allowed to
borrow without council’s
permission.
“I would like council to take
action to make it very clear that [the
BIA] cannot proceed like this,” he
said.
John Stewart, who is both a long-
time member of the Blyth Lions
Club and on the BIA executive, said
that the money was offered by the
Blyth Lions Club to the committee
and not requested as a loan from the
BIA.
“The BIA did not make a request
but the Blyth Lions Club
volunteered to cover the immediate
Streetfest expenses, should it be
required,” he said in an e-mail to
The Citizen.“The Lions Executive
reasoned that Streetfest was a
community event and the Lions
have always been supportive
of the community. Fifteen hundred
dollars was allocated to assist the
BIA in the short term. I’m
not sure if any of the money
was used by the BIA, but the
full amount was returned
to the Lions shortly after Street-
fest.”
Ready for the season
Auburn held its annual village pumpkin party over the weekend and a number of people, young
and old, keen for Halloween were in attendance. Once the pumpkins were made into jack-o-
lanterns, they were put on display for all to see, under the looming light of one gigantic
pumpkin. (Mark Royall photo)
