North Woods students make
their take-home birdhouses
Learning and helping
Through the Maitland Valley Conservation Authority and
the Toronto Dominion (TD) Bank’s Friends of the
Environment Program, students at North Woods
Elementary School had the opportunity to build some bird
houses and learn about woodworking earlier this month.
Ella Smith, left, and Lana Dauphin were two such students
who took to the school’s outdoor classroom to enjoy some
fresh air and instruction. (Denny Scott photo)

We are ever so grateful at North
Woods Elementary School to have
such wonderful outdoor learning
grounds. All of our classes have been
using this natural resource to explore
and help develop a deeper
appreciation for nature. We also
welcome other schools as they come
to learn about nature at North
Woods.
Our Kindergarten classes have
been discussing changing seasons
and have been watching the leaves
shift colour and drop from the trees.
They have been busy raking leaves
and of course taking the time to
jump in them. What fun!
Grade 1/2 students have been
taking their learning outdoors this
year. Each student in the class has
picked a tree friend in the school
yard and will be following their tree
friend through the seasons, learning
about the changes they go through.
The children will be studying each
other’s tree to create a tree guide
they will be able to take home with
them at the end of the year. This is a
great way for students to gain a great
deal of information, as well as build
respect and relationships with their
natural surroundings in their
community.
They will also be creating a critter
guide throughout the year with
different animals they learn about.
These guides will be a great help for
students in building their non-fiction
reading and writing skills.
The Grade 1/2 class tries to take
their learning outside at least once a
day, be it to do some reading, writing
or going on nature walks where they
tie their learning in, like learning
about colours in nature or how the
animals are preparing for winter by
migrating or readying their homes.
Through September and October,
Grade 1/2 students have been
building their outdoor routines,
including using nature calls to help
keep themselves organized such as
the coyote call to bring everyone
back together or “jay jay” that
students can use to draw their
attention to something they find
really interesting.
The Grade 2/3 class set up bird
feeders outside of their classroom
observation window. One of their
weekly jobs is to fill up the bird
feeders. The feeders haven’t needed
to be filled up much yet, but students
predict the birds will be eating more
once the weather becomes colder.
Students have seen several types of
birds, such as blue jays, at our bird
feeders.
The Maitland Valley Conservation
Authority made a visit to our Grade
4 classes this fall and worked with
students to build bird houses. Each
child was able to take one home to
hang up. They talked about local
bird species at risk and the
importance of healthy habitats. This
program, Home is Habitat, was
sponsored by the TD Friends of the
Environment Foundation.
Over the summer, considerable
construction was done at North
Woods. The front entrance to the
school has a new look with
reconstructed canopy pillars and
storage room as well as a beautiful
feature wall hosting our school
name. Accessibility features were
upgraded as well. Inside, air
conditioning units were added to
make our school fully air
conditioned. Thanks to the Avon
Maitland District School Board for
looking after us at North Woods!
