HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 2015-10-22, Page 28There are a number of Blyth
Festival connections on this year’s
short list for the Tom Hendry
Awards, presented annually by the
Playwrights Guild of Canada.
Britta Johnson of Stratford is on
the short list for the Stage West
Pechet Family Musical Award for
her work Life After.
Alligator Tears, written and
directed by Johnson, was produced
by the Young Company for two years
in 2010 and 2011. Johnson’s
production was the first Young
Company production to ever grace
the Memorial Hall stage, doing so in
2011 after a tremendously
successful 2010.
Vern Thiessen is also nominated in
the same category for his work on
The Best Laid Plans: A Musical.
Thiessen’s Vimy was produced at the
Blyth Festival in 2011 to much
acclaim.
Mark Crawford, no stranger to the
Blyth Festival, was also nominated.
Crawford’s Bed and Breakfast was
on the short list for the Stage West
Pechet Family Comedy Award.
Crawford’s Stag and Doe was
produced at the Blyth Festival in
2014 and on opening night of the
2015 season, Crawford was the
keynote speaker at the Festival’s
opening night gala dinner.
Crawford is currently the
playwright-in-residence at the Blyth
Festival and he is busy at work on a
new comedy called The Birds and
the Bees.

attendance. He said that over the
course of the campaign he had
knocked on 18,000 doors. The
distance he walked, he said, was
between 400 and 450 miles, which,
ironically enough, would just about
get you from Huron-Bruce to
Ottawa, he said (although, he
conceded, you may have had to
thumb a ride from Barhaven, a small
town just outside of Ottawa, the rest
of the way).
In the face of his victory, he also
expressed sadness that a lot of good
MPs lost their jobs that night, saying
he was keeping their families in
mind.
He spoke about the different
“elections” that took place over the
course of the campaign – in that
there had been a number of small
referendums over the course of the
past 11 weeks that were both good
and bad for the Conservatives.
It started with the trial of Senator
Mike Duffy, then transitioned to the
issue of the economy and job
creation, then the controversy over
the niqab and finally who was the
best person to lead the nation.
On a lighter note, Lobb told his
supporters some stories from the
road, saying that some of his
supporters had worn out shoes
walking with him, and that the
radiator in his car broke during the
campaign – a Ford Focus, he said,
with nearly 350,000 kilometres on it.
Lobb ended the night on an
emotional note. After the light-
hearted stories and thanks to his
supporters, Lobb thanked McKinley
for coming to the Candelight.
It had been 50 years since
McKinley first took office, Lobb
said as his eyes welled up with tears,
and Lobb said he tried to run his
campaign the “Bob McKinley way”
before saying goodnight to those in
attendance.
In a post to his supporters, Allan
Thompson thanked those who
supported him. Thompson
eventually made his way to
Goderich from Kincardine to
congratulate Lobb in person, saying
that on the way, a deer leapt in front
of their vehicle, making for a close
call on a wet, windy drive.
“It was a close call. But the buck
survived and will live to see another
day,” Thompson wrote.
According to early results from
Elections Canada, voter turnout in
Huron-Bruce was just over 72 per
cent, a figure which did not include
electors who registered on election
day.

Huron-Bruce MPP Lisa Thompson, left, was at Goderich’s
Candlelight Restaurant Monday night to support Huron-
Bruce MP Ben Lobb, who was elected to a third term that
night. Lobb was glued to his cell phone in the early parts of
the night, wondering if he would retain his seat, which he
did, by a margin of just over 2,500 votes. (Shawn Loughlin photo)
