Total receipts for Brussels
Livestock for the week ending Oct.
16 were 2,096 cattle and 445 lambs
and goats. On Tuesday fed steers and
heifers sold on an active trade at
prices $3 to $5 higher. Choice steers
and heifers sold $154 to $157 with
sales to $180. Second cut sold $151
to $154. Cows sold under pressure.
On Thursday light weight holstein
calves traded steady to last week
with heavy and plain types selling $5
lower. Beef calves traded steady to
slightly easier. Lambs and sheep
sold steady while goats sold higher
on a good active trade. On Friday
calves and yearlings sold on a good
steady trade.
Muriel Osborne of Lucknow,
consigned six steers that averaged
1,198 lbs. and sold for an average
price of $171.20. Four black steers
averaged 1,164 lbs. and sold to
Wayne Martin for an average
price of $180. Darryl Klein of
Mildmay, consigned two simmental
steers that averaged 1,333 lbs.
and sold to Wayne Martin for
an average price of $161.
Connell Farms Inc. of Palmerston,
consigned 36 heifers that averaged
1,540 lbs. and sold for an average
price of $151.40. Three red heifers
averaged 1,437 lbs. and sold to Clark
Bros. Livestock for an average price
of $156.50. Robin Riehl of Gadshill,
consigned three cattle that averaged
1,257 lbs. and sold for an average
price of $144.38. One limousin
heifer weighed 1,215 lbs. and sold to
St. Helen’s Meat Packers for $154.
There were 180 cows on offer.
Export types sold $90 to $96 with
sales to $101; beef, $91 to $104 with
sales to $120; D1 and D2, $90 to
$94; D3, $82 to $90; D4, $72 to $82.
Murray and Kevin Rennick of
Monkton, consigned one red cow
that weighed 1,090 lbs. and sold for
$120.
There were four bulls selling $117
to $140. Jessie Van Loo of Bluevale,
consigned one charolais bull that
weighed 2,222 lbs. and sold for
$140.
There were 110 head of veal on
offer. Beef sold $175 to $250 with
sales to $282; good holsteins, $175
to $190 with sales to $196; plain
holsteins, $130 to $140; heavy
holsteins, $145 to $155. Lamar Frey
of Listowel, consigned three heifers
that averaged 900 lbs. and sold for
an average price of $231.42. One
limousin heifer weighed 845 lbs. and
sold for $282. Rueben S. Martin of
Wallenstein, consigned five cattle
that averaged 861 lbs. and sold for
an average price of $252.60. One
limousin heifer weighed 825 lbs. and
sold for $269. Jonathan Jantzi of
Linwood consigned two steers that
averaged 873 lbs. and sold for an
average price of $238.60. One
limousin steer that weighed 790 lbs.,
sold for $249.
Lambs, 50 - 64 lbs. sold $237 to
$285; 65 - 79 lbs., $229 to $290; 80
- 94 lbs., $206 to $230; 95 - 110 lbs.,
$200 to $211 / lb.
Sheep sold $90 to $125 / lb.
Goats: kids sold $150 to $250;
nannies, $80 to $125; billies, $150 to
$250 / lb.
Top quality stocker steers, 400 -
499 lbs. sold $313 to $345; 500 -
599 lbs., $294 to $340; 600 - 699
lbs., $266 to $300; 700 - 799 lbs.,
$257 to $266; 800 - 899 lbs., $233 to
$244; 900 - 999 lbs., $229 to $233;
1,000 lbs. and over, $211 to $231.
Top quality stocker heifers, 300 -
399 lbs. sold $315 to $340; 400 -
499 lbs., $295 to $320; 500 - 599
lbs., $253 to $292; 600 - 699 lbs.,
$247 to $270; 700 - 799 lbs., $232 to
$245; 800 - 899 lbs., $220 to $237;
900 lbs. and over, $193 to $211.
Mike Lyons of Londesborough,
consigned 29 steers that averaged
537 lbs. and sold for an average
price of $315.79. Carolyn Kelly of
Freelton, consigned 25 heifers that
averaged 610 lbs. and sold for an
average price of $266.81.

The Ontario Federation of
Agriculture (OFA) has made every
effort during the election campaign
to get agriculture on the minds of
federal candidates. Agriculture
rarely tops election platform
priorities for any party, but the OFA
has been working with all parties
and candidates to keep agriculture
issues on the table, helping to build a
greater understanding of the
programs and regulations that
impact Canadian and Ontario
farmers.
The OFA has been emphasizing
three key federal issues that impact
Ontario’s agricultural industry –
Risk Management Programs,
infrastructure support and
agricultural research. It’s important
the federal and provincial
governments work together to
improve risk management options
for farmers. These programs include
the Risk Management Program,
Production Insurance, Agri-Invest
and Agri-Stability.
When it comes to advocating for
infrastructure support, the OFA has
been clear with candidates that the
