Things sure have been busy at Hullett Central Public School. Our senior soccer teams travelled to Clinton Public School earlier this fall to participate in their tournament. The girls team placed second and the boys placed third. The Junior Soccer teams were busy practising for their tournament on Oct. 20. Thanks to our soccer coaches, Mrs. Gerber, Mrs. Fritzley, Mr. Coups, Mr. Caldwell and Mr. Campbell. Now our students are running the distance as they have completed regional cross country, while 34 of our students competed on Oct. 15th at the Wildwoods Conservation Area in St. Marys. Thanks to coach Caldwell, once again, for taking on this project. The week of Oct. 5 – 9, we held our Farm Credit Corporation and BDO Canada National Food Drive. Students were motivated to help fight hunger, by participating in special theme days. Monday was “up and at it” pyjama day, where students brought in a breakfast or hygiene item. Protein Tuesday allowed the chewing of gum during school. Starchy Wednesday donations saw many colourful sport jerseys highlighting the fashion for the day. Thursday was “Get your Fruits and Veggies Day” and students could wear their hats all day inside the building. Finally Fun Friday was laundry and baby items as well as fun foods that we all think of as treats that we know other kids at the food bank would enjoy. A total of 863 pounds were collected in our caring and compassionate community. Way to fight hunger Hullett! We have also had some other spirit days. On Wednesday, Oct. 14 students wore their Toronto Blue Jays clothing, or anything blue to cheer on the Jays. Looks like it worked! Our student council organized a “Black and Gold Day” which are our school colours so the students could show off their school spirit. Our school council executive is Jaden Shortreed, president; Joy Pizzati, vice-president; Claire Scrimgeour, secretary and Bailey Hamp, treasurer. We look forward to the many exciting events they are planning. October brings Halloween and our student council is planning activities to celebrate on Oct. 30. Students can wear their costumes or just wear Buying a buy It’s not every day that the dress code at school can include a jersey, but students at Hullett Central Public School were able to sport their favourite baseball, hockey or extreme sports jerseys on Wednesday by simply bringing a starchy food bank donation to school for the Farm Credit Food Drive. On Thanksgiving weekend, a great deal of celebrating was done outdoors in the warm sunshine. It was noted at our home that the trees were not showing much fall colour yet. This past weekend we experienced a thick blanket of wet snow and the trees had not only shown much colour, but lost a lot of leaves. Congratulations and best wishes are extended to Stanley Airdrie and Mikyla Miller, who were joined in marriage on Saturday, Oct. 17 in London. Long-time residents of the village will remember Stan, son of Dorothy Airdrie, who grew up in our midst. Stan and Mikyla live in London and their family includes Mikyla’s daughter, Mayah, and their daughter, Keady. Let’s do coffee! Radford’s Farm Equipment and the post office invite you to drop by on Thursday, Oct. 29 to share a coffee and treat in support of the Alzheimer Society of Huron County. This disease affects many families in our area and the monies raised through coffee breaks fund research. I hope you will find time that day to visit. Minding your p’s and q’s is a warning to be on your best behaviour. The expression may have originated in the seventeenth century in the French Court. Persons learning to dance were reminded to mind their feet [pieds] and tails of their wigs [queues] when they took to the floor. Seems one could lose their elaborate wig when bowing too low. Nearer home barkeeps kept an account of how much beer their patrons drank by marking pints as a “p” and quarts as a “q”. Ergo patrons were well advised to mind their drinks, p’s and q’s, so as not to be over-charged at the end of the night. This week ponder ‘hanging fire’. Not the Rogers Centre Though they may look a little like the recent American League East Division Champion Blue Jays, these particular baseball fanatics from Hullett Central Public School are just a handful of the many students who donned their Blue Jays best to help the Toronto baseball squad finish their unforgettable comeback from a two-games-to-none deficit that ended last Wednesday night. (Denny Scott photo) NEWS FROM LONDESBORO The sanctuary of Londesborough United Church was tastefully decorated for the fall season on Sunday, Oct. 11. The Thanksgiving service began with a selection by the Praise Band, “Ev’ry Day Is a Day of Thanksgiving”. This group also offered “Spirit, Spirit of Gentleness” during the receiving of the morning’s offering. “Thanks to God” was the anthem sung by the senior choir. This theme of giving thanks for all our blessings was included in the children’s time. Rev. Fletcher remarked to the boys and girls just how many people had to be thanked for the gift of a loaf of bread - the farmer, the baker, the store owner, etc. Ultimately all gift[s] can be tracked back to God. “Don’t Say It - Be It”, loosely translated as be thankful in actions, Acknowledge Exceptional.
