Taking to the ice The Blyth Brussels Bantam Girls team took on a team from Central Perth on Sunday at the Blyth and District Community Centre, hitting the ice just as the weather turned cold and icy outdoors as well. The locals took home the win, shutting out their opponents by a score of 3-0. (Jim Brown photo) Greeting worshippers at Blyth United Church on Sunday, Oct. 18 was Terry Richmond. Ushering were Nicole Kerr and Lissa Kolkman. Marc McNamara was guest music director and Bryce Glousher ran the power point. Rev. Gary Clark welcomed everyone to church and drew attention to the announcements printed in the bulletin and rolling on the power point. He made special mention that there will be no church service at Blyth United next Sunday, Oct. 25, as we will be celebrating both Blyth United and Brussels United Church anniversary services in Brussels this year at 11 a.m. Lunch will be provided by both Brussels and Blyth after the service. The Sunday Fun Time Group (Sunday school) will continue to collect items for the food bank the first Sunday in November as there is no service in Blyth the last Sunday of October. He reminded everyone to mark their calendar for Nov. 12 for the first movie night. There will be a light supper at 6 p.m. and the movie will start at 6:45 p.m. Come and enjoy supper or just the movie. Rev. Clark invited everyone to greet one another. The first hymn, “My Love Colours Outside the Lines” was sung, accompanied by Rev. Clark playing the guitar and Marc McNamara playing the piano. The opening prayer was said responsively with sign language in the response. Lavern Clark and Rev. Clark read the scripture lessons about the story of Adam and Eve and the story of the loaves and fishes. They watched a short video of how it can happen in today’s world. We give, because there is a need, like the Sunday Fun Time Group are collecting for the food bank. The children went downstairs for their time of fellowship. The choir sang the anthem, “’Tis so Sweet to Trust in Jesus.” Rev. Clark’s message to the congregation was “Your Vote is Your Voice.” It is our right to vote and by voting we are voicing our opinion. Voting is an expression of Hope. Hope for the next four years. In the scripture Adam and Eve had a choice of good and evil. In today’s world, there is a tug of war between good and evil. Jesus tells us that for the health of a community we need to help the poor. Jesus cared about forgiveness. The well-being of the community is measured by the poor. John Kennedy once said, “Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country.” During the month of October the Sunday Fun Time Group is sharing what they have by collecting the food for the food bank. The apple appears in many stories. First the story of Adam and Eve and also in Snow White. The apple symbolizes fear in both stories – fear that if you eat the apple you will die. Fear often stops us from doing good and being the people that God wants us to be. If you listen to your fears you will die never knowing what a great person you are. We can trade fear and anxiety for hope and peace. Trust in Jesus, miracles still happen. The first verse of the favourite hymn, “Be Still My Soul” was sung. The offering was received followed by the singing of the offertory response, “We Give Thee But Thine Own”, the offertory prayers, the prayers of the people, silent prayers and the singing of The Lord’s Prayer led by Barb Richmond. The last hymn, “Make Me a Channel of Your Peace” was followed by the blessing and singing of “May the Good Lord Bless and Keep You”. Everyone was invited for coffee and treats. Too wise to err--and too loving to be unkind! (Arthur Pink) “I delight to do Your will, O my God!” Psalm 40:8 Faith endures the disappointments, the hardships, and the heartaches of life--by recognizing that all comes from the hand of Him who is too wise to err--and too loving to be unkind. There is no higher aspect of faith, than that which brings the heart to patiently submit unto whatever God sends us, to meekly acquiesce unto His sovereign will, to say, “Shall I not drink the cup of suffering which my Father has given me?” Faith when it reaches the pinnacle of attainment declares, “though He slays me, yet will I trust in Him!” When we receive all that enters our lives as from God’s hand, then, no matter what may be our circumstances or surroundings--whether in a hovel, a prison-dungeon, or a martyr’s stake--we shall be enabled to say, “The lines have fallen unto me in pleasant place!” But that is the language of faith, not of sight or sense. “Father, if You are willing, please take this cup of suffering away from Me. Yet I want Your will to be done, not Mine!” Luke 22:42 “It is a genuine evidence of true godliness when, although plunged into the deepest afflictions, we yet humbly submit ourselves to God. It is the height of piety to be submissive to the sovereign will of God.” John Calvin “It is not enough to bear the cross, but we must take it up, we must accommodate ourselves to it, and acquiesce in the will of God in it. Not, “this is an evil, and I must bear it, because I cannot help it;” but “this is an evil, and I will bear it, because it is the will of God.” Matthew Henry “Christian contentment is that sweet, inward, quiet, gracious frame of spirit, which freely submits to and delights in God’s wise and fatherly disposal in every condition.” Jeremy Burroughs A Grace Gem Submitted by: Immanuel United Reformed Church, Listowel, ON 519-291-1956 By Marilyn Craig Call 523-9318 From Marilyn’s Desk Wash & Fold Services Blyth Laundromat 191 Westmoreland St., Blyth 519-523-9687 See histories and historic photographs on the Huron History section of our website www.northhuron.on.ca
