(Vicky Bremner photo NH covered for hazardous materials The Fire Department of North Huron is entering into an agreement with Quantum Murray, a company that handles hazardous material to help with hazardous spills in its coverage area. Fire Chief David Sparling said that North Huron firefighters found themselves battling a diesel spill recently in Wingham and that they found it taxed all the training and equipment they had. “We have limited resources to manage hazardous materials such as diesel,” he said. “The reality is that situations like that are rare occurrences, but, when they do happen, we want resources, be it people or materials, to be there whether it’s 9 p.m. on a Thursday, 7 a.m. on a Saturday or 2 p.m. on a Monday afternoon.” Sparling said that he met with representatives of Foxton Fuels to ask who they would suggest the department partner with to have the training and supplies necessary to deal with hazardous materials and was told there are two companies. After both companies presented to representatives from North Huron, Howick and Morris-Turnberry, Quantum Murray was chosen. “They handle hazardous material contracts from the OPP for drug labs and work with Wescast,” Sparling said. Sparling said the best part about working with Quantum Murray is that, as long as Howick approved a similar motion, there would be no up- front or on-going costs. “If we work together, Quantum Murray will provide us with a large cache of spill supplies,” he said. “More supplies than we have now and it will handle more than just petroleum products. They will provide the supplies on consignment, giving us thousands in supplies, but we won’t pay unless we use them.” Sparling also said the company will provide instruction on how to use products. “We’re never going to be a full-fledged hazardous material response department,” Sparling said. “It’s nice to know, however, we will have the basic, immediate materials and instructions and nice to know the cavalry will be on the way as soon as we call.” Quantum Murray won’t charge unless products are used, as long as North Huron calls them if there is an incident. “The three representatives all agreed this was the best choice,” he said. “Working together, the three municipalities will get something we couldn’t get individually.” Council approved a motion to have Sparling go foward with the Quantum Murray contract.
