Rare lunar eclipse provides
unique and exciting experience
Holy! That’s the word that rattled
about in my mind as the lunar
eclipse took place on Sunday night.
Starting about 9 p.m. the full moon
made its approach towards the earth,
mind you it’s still 356,900
kilometres away.
What a time of wonder as the
shadow crept across the face of the
moon. The light bent and retracted
making for a very nice show, and
like all the good things in life, it took
time. Once again many things need
to align before the good things
happen. The next total eclipse of the
moon will be in 2018.
One of the neat things that
happens regularly on Friday at noon
in Brussels is Soup & More 2. A free
lunch is prepared by volunteers and
folks come to share fellowship, food
and fun. It has been good for many,
as the volunteers get to work with a
variety of people.
The Ministerial folk got it started
when Elaine Armstrong offered the
opportunity of good nutrition and
dietary experience to the
community. So five years ago – yes
it’s been going for five years – some
of the area church members gathered
to work out details and the meals
started. Expansion of the volunteer
base has been great as many in the
community saw the joy of working
together in full community. Very few
Fridays are missed when people
drop in for conversation, soup of the
day and a few extras.
The Presbyterian Church is the
site and the volunteer workers do the
details. On Oct. 6 at 7:30 p.m. a
review of the past year will take
place and plans for next year will be
made. You’re invited to attend and
you may even find a volunteer role
you’d like.
Gary Clark is offering free guitar
lessons to the community on
Thursdays at 4:45 at the United
Church. Pop in at that time and ask
him about the details.
An afternoon of memories and
celebration of life past happened in
Walton on Sunday. Duff’s United
had a capacity crowd to hear great
music and the memories from past
clergy and members’ names like
Higgenbottom, Docken, Baker,
Cole-Arnal, Rev. Peter, McGavin,
Humphries, Macdonald, Mitchell,
and Wilbee were just a start on the
stories remembered. It was a great
celebration of community.
The nice fall days are here; time to
kick leaves, enjoy the fresh air and
watch the harvest. We are blessed.
By now, Betty G.W.

Helping the Leos out
At the Brussels Fall Fair late last month, the Brussels Leo
Club also seized the opportunity to officially open their new
sports pad, which has been supported by a number of local
organizations and service clubs. One of the groups
supporting the Leos was the Brussels Lions Club, which
donated $2,000 to the project that night. Lions Club
President Bob Gillis, left, presented the club’s cheque for
the project to Leo Club President Jasmine Vader. (Shawn

The Brussels Legion Branch was
pretty quiet this week with the
normal Cadet meeting on Tuesday
evening. They have over 30 Cadets
in the Corp at this time but will
always welcome more. Youth
between the ages of 12 and 18 are
welcome to drop in and check out
what Cadets are all about.
There is also a Parent Support
Committee that would welcome
more hands to help out on
fundraising ideas and projects. The
Cadets still collect pop cans and
returnable bottles as part of their
fundraising. They can be dropped
off at the Branch on Monday or
Tuesday evening for pickup by the
Corp.
The general meeting was held on
Tuesday evening with the annual
inspection by the Zone and Deputy
Zone Commanders attending. The
normal business was conducted
and comments from Zone
Commander Eric Ross and Deputy
Zone Commander Keith
VanderHoek were all positive for
the Branch.
A reminder that the Branch still
accepts pop tabs for wheelchairs
project. The Branch has some
medical equipment for loan if an
emergency arises and it is needed by
anyone in the community.

Cadets welcome more
than 30 to the Corp
