Emily Bieman was recently
named Ambassador for the
Elementary School Fair this year.
After giving her speech on the fair
and its importance both to her and to
education, she was named to the
prestigious position that will see her
represent the fair as well as be a big
part of it.
Bieman, who is getting ready to
go into Grade 6 at Maitland River
Elementary School, said she decided
to run because she enjoys the fair
and because it represents the culmi-
nation of a lot of activities for her.
Being involved in 4-H sheep, beef
and crops clubs, the fair is where
she gets to show off what she
has learned and compete against
other people with a focus on agricul-
ture.
She said that Elementary School
Fair Board Chair Margaret Vincent
really helped her through the
process.
“I knew her before, from 4-H,”
she explained. “Knowing she was a
part of it made it something I
thought I could do.”
Bieman believes that agriculture is
of the utmost importance for young
people to know about, especially
with so many of them going to more
urban schools. She recently earned a
second-place finish at the district
division of the Royal Canadian
Legion Public Speaking competition
with a speech about the importance
of agriculture.
“The fair is important because it
teaches us about livestock, crops and
agriculture,” she said. “That’s what I
spoke about then and now. It’s a lot
of fun and kids need to be involved
in it.
“It’s very important to learn about
agriculture,” she said.
She is looking forward to
A big responsibility

how important it is for students to learn about agriculture
through school and special events like the fair. (Denny Scott

Knox United Church held its
Vacation Bible School Aug. 17-21.
They had an open house on
Thursday, Aug. 20 at 7 p.m. for
friends and family to come and see
what the children had been doing all
week. The theme was Son Force
Kids. As special agents, the children
explored Bible stories, crafts,
enjoyed snacks and games dealing
with the space theme.
The community extends congratu-
lations and best wishes to Ross and
Barbara Anderson on their 65th
wedding anniversary Aug. 19.
On Sunday, Aug. 16 Knox United
Church service was held at Ken and
Lila Procter’s pond. Church service
at Knox United was at 11 a.m. on
Aug. 23 and it will be at 11 a.m. on
Aug. 30 with Trinity and
Dungannon attending. Anyone wish-
ing to recycle their four-litre milk
bags can bring them to church and
Jackie will gladly accept them to be
made into comfortable bed mats for
Haiti.
