The mood at Huron Chapel was buzzing in the morning service as men grabbed chairs to set up extra rows at the back of the sanctuary. Normally we have about 230 chairs set up in the sanctuary, but this morning 40 more chairs were quickly added to accommodate people. Some of the additional people were there because this was the Sunday, when following the morning service, we drive down to the Maitland River and witness people being baptized. This year there were seven. What added to the thrill this time around was that six out of the seven being baptized were teens or youth. Baptism is choosing to participate in the outward event to communicate to everyone what has already taken place in your heart. When a Christian wants to be baptized, they are wanting to publicly and joyfully declare that Jesus is the Lord of their life. Jesus, and Jesus alone, saves them and directs them throughout their life. Before heading out into the river, each person shared with the large group gathered what Jesus meant to them and why they wanted to be baptized. When they were finished, we made the trek out into the river where we found a spot deep enough to baptize each person. The crowd on shore was singing church songs. They clapped and cheered as each one was put into the water and brought out again. By going under the water these Christians are identifying with Jesus’s death. They know He died for them and their sins. Coming up out of the water they are identifying with Jesus’ resurrection. Romans 6: 4 says it this way in the Bible: “For we died and were buried with Christ by baptism. And just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glorious power of the Father, now we also may live new lives.” We are always grateful for Woody who allows and prepares his property on the river in Auburn for our baptismal service. Also we are thankful to the Blyth Legion which let us use its portable battery sound system so we could hear the testimonies of those being baptized. When the baptisms were finished I made my way back up to the church building, took off my river shoes I use only for this one special occasion every year, and began looking forward to next year when, Lord willing, we will gather by the river here in Auburn and witness more people being baptized. NEWS FROM AUBURN By Mark Royall Call 519-441-2223 PEOPLE AROUND AUBURN A big step Sunday was a big day on the Huron Chapel calendar, as members of the Auburn congregation made their way to the Maitland River so a handful of members could be baptized in the river’s free-flowing water. Here, Ben Buttar, centre, of Dutch Line professed his faith in the form of baptism. Ben was aided in his decision by his father Jason, left, and Huron Chapel Pastor Mark Royall. (Wes MacVicar photo) Todd Burpo, the New York Times bestselling author of Heaven Is For Real, will be in Blyth this October, speaking at Memorial Hall, brought to the community by Auburn’s Huron Chapel. Pastor Mark Royall of Huron Chapel, a Blyth resident, says the process began in spring, when he and others from his church knew they wanted to host an event in Blyth to reach out to the community. What the event would be, however, he wasn’t sure. Royall said that while it was all well and good to host events at the church, which Huron Chapel does, some can find church intimidating at times, even Royall. So the goal was to host an event at Memorial Hall, somewhere locals know and love, that would appeal to a wide scope of people. After praying about the event, Royall said it occurred to him that Heaven Is For Real would be the perfect fit for the event and what he was attempting to achieve with it. The story deals with a topic with which everyone has wrestled: what happens to us when we die? In addition, Royall said, it is a story that has made its way into the North American mainstream. The book has sold over 10 million copies and the movie based on the book has grossed over $100 million at the box office. The book, written by Burpo, a pastor at Crossroads Wesleyan Church in Imperial, Nebraska, tells the story of Burpo’s three-year-old son Colton and his emergency surgery when he said he crossed over into heaven. After Colton’s encounter, Burpo writes that Colton began describing, in detail, events that seemed impossible for him to know about, including an unborn sister and a great-grandfather of his who died 30 years before Colton was born. In his account, Colton also described seeing Mary and Jesus in heaven. After Royall decided that he wanted to pursue the Heaven Is For Real story for Huron County, he said he was surprised at the ease with which he was able to convince Burpo to come to Canada. With the popularity of the book, and the subsequent movie, Burpo has his pick of speaking engagements all over the world. However, when Royall described the farming community of Huron County to Burpo, a community very similar to Burpo’s in Nebraska, as well as the outreach Huron Chapel was trying to undertake, Burpo said he’d love to come to Blyth. Burpo will be at Memorial Hall on Saturday, Oct. 3 and the show begins at 7 p.m. Tickets are available for $10 each at the Blyth Festival box office, or at the Radiant Life book store in Goderich. The event, Royall says, is already over half sold out. If there are tickets available the night of the show, they will be $20 at the door. Burpo to speak at Blyth event
