The Marlins ranked first in their division, which gave them a by until Saturday morning play. Round-robin games were scheduled Saturday against Dundas, Wilmot and North Oxford. The marlins managed a win for each of these continuing on to Sunday to start off against a very strong Ancaster team. With temperatures soaring above 30°C, the seasoned athletes rallied through the game and came up with another win of 5-4 against Ancaster sending them undefeated to the gold medal game. All the players, especially the catchers are commended for their battle through the extreme heat. The final game was sure to be exciting as the Marlins faced off against one of their tough rivals North Oxford Crush. Back and forth, offensive and defensive plays seemed very closely matched as the score only varied by a run or two up to the sixth inning. However, in true Marlin style, the girls’ adrenaline kicked in to overdrive and the bats came alive as they overtook the Crush 16-8 for a final score and well-deserved gold medal. Throughout the season, these talented young ballplayers have earned a gold at the Whitby Summer Slam, gold at Provincial Qualifiers (undefeated), silver at Provincial Grands and this third gold at the year-end tournament (undefeated). Coach Mark, Ken and Dave as well as their parents, friends and other fans are truly proud of this group of dedicated young women and wish them all the luck as they journey to Quebec this week on their quest for gold at the Eastern Canadian Championships. Triple threat The Palmerston Marlins earned their third first-place finish at a tournament in their season when they won the Grand Valley division of the Provincial Women’s Softball Association year-end tournament.
