Johnston, along with her mother Dawn and Nicole Noble of the Brussels Agricultural Society, attended the province-wide ambassador competition over the weekend. The weekend began for Johnston at 5:30 a.m. Friday morning, when a limousine picked her up, along with the other ambassadors from the district, to taken to Toronto’s historic Exhibition Grounds. Johnston was in the first interview group, meaning that she was to speak to the judges at 10:30 that morning. That day also included a dress rehearsal for the semi-finals, a seminar on effective public speaking and good listening, the CNE’s Mardi Gras parade and a pizza party before returning to the Westin Harbour Castle hotel. The following day, Johnston took in a seminar on self-defense, as well as a seminar on self-branding, participated once again in the CNE’s Mardi Gras parade, more dress rehearsals, attended the Warrior’s Day parade and enjoyed a dinner at the upscale restaurant Gossip before returning to the hotel for the night. On Sunday, however, it was all business for Johnston, as the competition’s semi-finals began at 10:30 a.m. and the finals were at 2 p.m. Johnston said she had a great time at the competition and met some really great friends. Johnston’s birthday was Sunday and she was serenaded with Happy Birthday by all 77 other contestants. “I met some awesome people and made friends that I plan to stay in touch with. The Warrior’s Day parade was a personal favourite of my weekend at the CNE,” Johnston said. “This weekend was extremely memorable and it was a n amazing experience that I’ll never forget.” Ambassadors that finished in the top seven of the competition were from Arthur, Elmvale, Mount Forest, New Hamburg, Stratford, Thorndale and Wellesley, with Matt Harwood of Elmvale winning the competition. He is the second male ambassador in the CNE’s history. NEWS FROM BRUSSELS A big party Not many people can claim to have had 77 fall fair ambassadors singing ‘Happy Birthday’ to them, but outgoing Brussels Fall Fair Ambassador Jamee Johnston can. Johnston’s birthday coincided with the provincial ambassador contest at the Canadian National Exhibition. As we use up the last of August, we still have time to see another Blyth Festival show, spend time at the pool, hit the beach, listen for the bagpipes at sundown, attend the last few ball games, to name but a few fun things. There is always something to do and see in August. Jill, eight, spent a few days with us this month and part of her time was spent picking stones off a future lawn. It was fun to see her mind at work as we negotiated her wages for this never-ending job. Her goal was $15 and with meticulous records in her book and mine, she reached her goal and proudly flipped her paper money cash at Chris and Lara on her return home. Now I’m hearing that Harvey Shaw is looking to set up a crew to replace Jill’s roll in the relocation of stones. The suburbs of Cranbook were bustling on Sunday as Yellowknife’s Peter, along with London’s Craig, Lisa, Duncan and Everett welcomed folks to the 50th wedding anniversary of their parents, Kathy and Frank Workman. The lovely afternoon weather just begged friends and family to linger on the lawn, admire the garden and chat and enjoy refreshments. With 50 years to celebrate, pictures from the past are always a hit. Joan Brewer and Mary Martin had red ribbons to remind them of their role in the wedding party, Davey Marks sported a nifty blue one, but they tell me that the blue didn’t mean he wasn’t a winner. For me a party with the Craig girls is always fun, as we shared Bluevale United history, as well as the stories of the community and our rule in it. Their age span was pretty close to our family so activities often overlapped. Sleepovers at their house were always enlightening as I grew up with four brothers and their home had four girls. Oh my, my, the stories I probably told my mother. The midwives of our area had a display at the market on Friday, and for this old obstetric nurse, it was neat to see the new methods of assisting the labour and delivery of the miracle of birth. There is always something to learn. Take care. By now, Betty G.W. 401 Turnberry St., Brussels 519-887-8011 CAFÉ More than just a great sandwich! On Saturday, Aug. 29, members of the Brussels station of the Huron East Fire Department will be the centre of attention in a swim relay that will measure 300 lengths of the Brussels Pool. In addition, there will be a number of other firefighter- related activities at the site, including a touch-the-truck opportunity, a dunk tank and the Huron County smoke trailer, so families can test themselves out in a fire emergency. New firefighter Heather Dunbar is organizing the event and, as a recreational swimmer, she said it only made sense to her. The department needs a new compressor and Aug. 29 will simply be a day of fun and interaction available to members of the community and their volunteer firefighters.
