PEOPLE AROUND
WALTON
I am sure there is lots of news
around, but after spending last week
at the Walton Raceway for the
TransCan motocross, I know a lot of
things like where’s the track, where
do we camp, how much does it cost,
where is sign in, when do the races
begin, is there ice, an ATM, food
somewhere? Lots of questions. But
what happened in Walton/Brussels is
a good question.
The turnout for the 24th annual
amateur TransCan races had the
most entries ever with over 780
entered. The campground was full,
the spectators were good everyday
and by far a great turnout for the
concert by Brett Kissel.
The ambulance calls were down
for riders, but up for after hour
mishaps. Good weather was enjoyed
by all, so ice sales were up! The
Grand National Final was held on
Sunday and a steady flow of
spectators kept the gate staff busy
for a few hours. In all a great week at
the raceway.
The Canadian Plowing Match is
coming to Wolfe Island, Near
Kingston soon. It should be quite an
event with Walton’s Brian McGavin,
representing Ontario, plowing
against his son, Brandon McGavin,
representing Alberta, in the same
class. They plow three days, two on
stubble and one on sod. It will be
interesting to see if a McGavin will
hopefully claim the top title in the
class and represent Canada in
England next year. Good luck to
both men.
Celebrating birthdays last week
include Christopher Bernard, Craig

Community supports Mitchells
The support of a small community
was evident last week with a co-
ordinated effort. Many had been
asking how to help the Neil and
Marie Mitchell family at this time
following the accident their children
were involved in. It was Marie’s
suggestion to provide a meal at
Ronald McDonald House. It is a
volunteer program for outside
groups to come in and provide meals
for the 70 possible family members.
It did not take long for the word to
get out and the ball rolling. A
maximum of eight volunteers were
required to cook the meal. Gloria
called me for my assistance in the
planning stages and with co-
ordination with the Ronald
McDonald House representative,
planned to serve a full roast beef
dinner with pie. All food must be
purchased and unopened with
receipts. Preparations must all be
done in the kitchen facilities at the
House. Many wanted to donate
groceries for the event, but their cash
donations went towards the purchase
of the groceries. The meat was
graciously donated by one local
family business and the cash
donations kept coming.
Gloria made a presentation on
behalf of the members of the
communities of Walton, Brussels,
Seaforth, Blyth and area of
$2,695.22 to Ronald McDonald
House for their use in providing a
place for children in crisis. Wow!
The families who enjoyed the
meal were thrilled to have such a
delicious “country” meal to enjoy
and praised the volunteers present
and were very appreciative. The
members of the community who
prepared the dinner were Gloria and
Keith Wilbee, Dianne McCallum,
Cindy Kerr, Colleen Bromley, Helen
and Shannon Craig and Teresa Baan.
I would like to thank Gloria for her
leap of faith and her good heart in
taking on the challenge of
organizing the event. She went the
extra mile, going on the mandatory
tour of the facility with Heidi
McClure, signing the forms, picking
up the Anna Mae pies and giving her
time. Ronald McDonald House
welcomes any group to come and
provide a meal for the residents, so
anyone wishing to organize a meal
or event, are encouraged to do so.
An update: Sarah Mitchell is
improving slowly. She is able to eat
pureed foods, speak, is recognizing
people and is sitting up some and
will still be awhile away from home.
The other girl, Guiliana and her
parents have returned to Italy, but
she has a long road ahead in her
recovery. Your prayers for both for
the girls are appreciated.
Doing lots of good
Volunteers from Walton’s Duff’s United Church were a busy bunch recently, as they travelled
to London to prepare a homemade roast beef dinner for 70 residents of the Ronald McDonald
House. The Mitchell family, including children Sarah and Sean, have used the House in recent
weeks after a vehicle collision near Dublin last month. Volunteers from Blyth, Brussels, Walton
and Seaforth raised $2,695.22 for the House as a result of the dinner. (Photo submitted)
Awarded
Huron East Mayor Bernie MacLellan thought it appropriate
to present the municipality’s Economic Development Officer
Jan Hawley with an award at a recent council meeting for
two reasons. Not only was he impressed with her hard work
that led to several new businesses choosing Huron East as
their setting through the Win This Space program, but the
award itself has significance, as it was created by one of the
new businesses attracted to Seaforth by Hawley. (Shawn

Huron County Ontario Provincial
Police (OPP) officers are currently
investigating a break, enter and theft
that occurred at Charlie’s Place
Restaurant located on Clyde Street
in Bluevale. Sometime between the
hours of 7 p.m. on Aug. 8 and 7 a.m.
on Aug. 9, those responsible forced
entry into the business through a
screen door that led into a porch.
Access was then gained into the
restaurant where the thieves stole a
quantity of cash from the cash
register and some change from a tip
jar.
Any person with information
regarding these incidents should
immediately contact Huron OPP at
1-888-310-1122 or (519) 524-8314.
Should you wish to remain
anonymous, you may call Crime
Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477),
where you may be eligible to receive
a cash reward of up to $2,000.
