2015 Canadian U16 Softball Champions
Chepstow team takes U16 national championship
The Chepstow Lang Farms U16
Softball Team travelled to Prince
Albert, Saskatchewan on Aug. 4 to
compete in the Canadian National
Softball Championship. Logan
Kellington, Ben Newell and Jack
Pipe (all from Brussels) were key
players on the team with all of them
receiving starting roles in various
games throughout the 10-
game tournament.
The tournament opened up with
Chepstow facing the strong host,
Prince Albert Astros who were the
Saskatchewan provincial
champions. Chepstow opened up
scoring late in the game and
surprised the hosts in a 10-0
shortened game. The remainder of
the round-robin portion of the
tournament saw Lang Farms putting
up big scores with their dominating
offence at the plate and strong
defence on the field. Chepstow
defeated Newfoundland 10-1,
Glencoe Ontario 20-1, Nova Scotia
10-1, Manitoba 4-1, Saskatoon 8-1
and Warman, Saskatchewan 9-6.
Their round-robin performance of
7-0 with a combined 71 runs for and
11 runs against, placed them in first
place for the playoff round.
In the first game of the playoffs,
Chepstow faced Newfoundland.
Chepstow took the win and moved
on to the undefeated game against
the familiar foe, Glencoe Home Run
Sports Force. The two teams had
faced each other multiple times
through Ontario tournaments with
Chepstow winning all five games.
The Force were looking for revenge
after the earlier 20-1 defeat in round-
robin play and came out strong with
timely hits capitalizing on a number
of Chepstow errors.
Glencoe took the game 10-3 and
handed Chepstow their first loss.
Chepstow was forced to regroup
after being sent to the semi- final
game on Sunday morning. Prince
Albert, Saskatchewan was
Chepstow’s opponent and once
again the boys triumphed 7-4 giving
themselves a berth at the national
gold medal game.
After a long week, Chepstow
squared off for the final time against
Glencoe. The two teams are a mere
180 kilometres apart and after
travelling over 3,000 kilometres the
two Ontario teams took to the field.
Chepstow opened the scoring in the
second inning with four runs
crossing the plate. The starting
pitcher from Glencoe was forced
from the game in the fourth inning
after Chepstow scored three more
runs putting the game into a mercy
situation. Chepstow held Glencoe
scoreless in the fifth and final inning
to take the Canadian National
Championship 7-0.
Personal achievements for the
local players included Ben Newell
batting .458 with five home runs and
16 RBIs. Jack Pipe had a .250
average scoring six times on three
hits with one RBI. Logan Kellington
batted .440 with one home run and
seven RBIs. Defensively, the three
had no errors. Their individual
contributions greatly assisted the
team in the best overall statistic:
Canadian gold.
The boys from Brussels and their
teammates had begun their weekly
team practices back in February
indoors at F.E. Madill Secondary
School and took to the ball field as
soon as the weather permitted.
Between practising, playing
exhibition games and fundraising the
boys had put in countless hours of
hard work to achieve their goal.
Support from the community in
the form of financial donations from
individuals, service clubs and
businesses helped to fund the team’s
travel. The support the boys
received from their families and
friends was greatly appreciated and
the positive messages from home
were great motivators.
The boys are now back playing
with their local team in Brussels
after a long and rewarding Ontario
Amateur Softball Association
season.

something she hopes to continue.
She said that having the Summer
Company program helped to fast-
track plans she had with her family
to start selling produce.
“Being on a tight budget with a
young family would have stopped us
from starting the booth this year,”
she said. “I had been looking
forward to doing something like
this, but we felt we would have to
hold off until we found out about the
grant. It has been a good investment
of my time.”
Brouwer also said that the mentor
program, which sees connections
made with local business people,
helped her as well.
The booth is set to remain open
until Labour Day and Brouwer is
hoping to start again next May. She
said that anyone interested in
ordering chicken (which is now sold
out this year) or looking for
information about next year’s crops
can call her at 226-963-1096 or visit
the Fresh from the Garden Facebook
page.
