Chepstow, with local
talent, win nationals
Logan Kellington, Ben Newell
and Jack Pipe, along with the rest of
the Chepstow Lang Farms U16
Lightning team have a lot to
celebrate as the squad managed to
take top spot at the Canadian Fast
Pitch Championship in Prince
Albert, Saskatchewan over the
weekend.
The team bested fellow Ontario
team Glencoe 7-0 in the final game
of the tournament to claim the prize
The tournament started
Wednesday, Aug. 5 with Chepstow
taking on the home-team Prince
Albert Astros and coming out with a
10-0 win.
That set the pace as the team
managed to earn seven wins in the
round robin and beating
Newfoundland 9-4 in their first
playoff game.
After that, they came up against
Glencoe for the first time and lost
11-4, Chepstow’s first loss of the
tournament.
The win guaranteed Glencoe’s
place in the championships and had
Chepstow facing off against Prince
Albert again to earn their spot. After
a 7-4 win against the hosts, the
Chepstow team had its chance to
redeem itself against Glencoe and
wasted no time, mercying the team
7-0 in five innings.
Check back with The Citizen for
reactions from the local boys on the
team.
Tigers devastate A’s,
mercy them 9-2
The Brussels Tigers scored at least
two runs in every inning, beginning
in the second, as they mercied the
Fullarton A’s 9-2 in five innings in a
Huron County Fastball League
contest played July 29 at the
Optimist Ball Park in Brussels.
The Tigers scored two runs in the
second, fourth and fifth innings and
put three runners across the plate in
the third inning. Fullarton scored
single runs in the third and fifth
innings.
Dennis Dewar started on the
mound for the Tigers, with Ty
Sebastian coming on in relief. They
combined for seven strike outs.
Dewar hit a triple and a single for
the Tigers, with Wade Stephenson
rapping out a trio of singles.
Sebastian had a double and two
singles with single base hits being
contributed by Gene Johnston, Steve
Scholl, Trent Michie and Ben
Newell.
Shawn Johnston of the Tigers said
Dennis Dewar had a strong pitching
performance for the Tigers, but gave
up runs early.
He added that the younger players
came through for the team as they
got key hits for the Tigers.
The Tigers were in Goderich on
Monday for a game against the
Grizzlies and then were in Walton on
Tuesday for a game against the
Brewers. The Tigers play host to the
Zurich Rangers on Wednesday,

Marlins take top spot at tourney
Last month, the Palmerston
Bantam Marlins, featuring a number
of local players, competed in the
Whitby Eagles Summer Slam
Tournament and brought home
double gold. The atmosphere was
clearly of dynamic proportions with
the Pan Am Games underway right
next door.
The girls took to the field despite
the heat and battled teams from Port
Perry, Peterborough, Whitby and
Kitchener White.
With a loss in the opening game,
the Marlins had to battle all the way
back. Great offensive and defensive
plays in the next games
brought them to the medal round
against Kitchener White and they
mercied them 10-0 to capture
gold.
Following this successful
weekend, the girls went on to
compete in their provincial
qualifiers in Stratford.
The competition here was very
intense, beginning with a game
against Kitchener Black, a team they
had not defeated this season.
Tension was high as the score
remained 3-1 for Kitchener for a few
innings. However, Holly Jackson
from Arthur stepped up to the
plate and smashed a ball
clean out of the park to
bring the score to 4-3 for
Palmerston.
The Marlins kept Kitchener to
three runs and defeated them with a
final score of 5-3.
Saturday and Sunday brought
extreme heat for the Marlins but the
girls battled through against
Cambridge, LaSalle and
Springfield.
In the semi-final game against
Springfield, Erin Schill delivered
three great fastballs to three batters,
all of which were fielded and out by
the Marlins’ amazing defence.
Three pitches, three outs, an
unbelievable inning which the coach
rewarded with ice cream.
Remaining undefeated, the
Marlins advanced to the gold medal
game to face off against Springfield
once more. The game was clearly
exciting and extremely intense as
the Marlins started with a 1-0 lead
and then Springfield brought home
one run. However, in true Marlin-
style determination, the girls rallied
right to the end to steal the gold
medal with a 2-1 score.
This put the Bantam Marlins in
the A division heading into
provincials in Kitchener last
weekend.
Double gold
The Palmerston Marlins, who draw players from all over including The Citizen’s coverage
area, managed two gold medal finishes in the Whitby Eagles Summer Slam tournament and
the squad’s provincial qualifiers recently. (Photo submitted)
