Many Richmond relatives gathered at the Blyth Lions park on Sunday, Aug. 9 for their annual summer picnic. Those attending were from Goderich, London, Strathroy, Belgrave, Atwood, Wingham, Kitchener, Windsor, LeFroy, Gowanstown and Blyth. Everyone enjoyed an afternoon of reminiscing and, of course, the food and the enjoyment of a potluck supper. (Photo submitted) Bonanza welcomes 200 visitors The Blyth Festival welcomed at least 200 people to see all four main- stage plays as part of the Bonanza Weekend. Those attendees were in addition to people who were seeing the shows independently. The weekend, which is the only time in the season all four plays are able to be watched, really shows how dedicated some of the Festival’s patrons are according to John McHenry, Director of Marketing and Development. “It was a really good weekend,” he said. “There are a lot of repeat customers and some of them have been coming for decades since the Bonanza weekend began.” McHenry went on to say that the weekend was good and started on a high note. “We had a full house on Friday night,” he said. “It was great. It might have been the best night of the season. There was a lot of buzz about that.” McHenry added that people come from all over the Golden Horseshoe and south of the border including Michigan and Ohio. Some of those families have made the weekend a tradition as well. “We have had some families grow up here,” he said. “They have come every year.” In his dealings with the visitors, McHenry said that the original, new plays are what bring them. “They tell us those plays bring them,” he said. “They can see broadways shows in the United States, but these Canadian stories don’t make it down there.” Bonanza weekend marked the end of Seeds and The Wilberforce Hotel and was the opening weekend for Mary’s Wedding. North Huron Township Council was brought up to date on the Huron County Economic Development Collaborative Strategic Planning initiative during its Aug. 4 meeting. Vicki Lass of the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA) and Natasha Fritzley from Huron County, alongside North Huron’s own Connie Goodall made a presentation to the council outlining the stages of the process. The end-goal of the initiative is to have a county-wide grasp on economic development and make sure that, within each lower-tier municipality, there are people trained to handle economic development inquiries and projects thanks to training provided by OMAFRA. Lass and Fritzley also requested that the township be involved in the project. While they stated the county needed no financial buy-in from lower-tier municipalities, they hoped that the council would allow staff hours (and thus expenses) to be directed to the project to allow for the training. After being brought up to date on the pending project, council had questions about how it would work for North Huron, however Councillor Brock Vodden felt that the plan was one to be wary of. “This is a fascinating concept, but I have some concerns,” he said. “There is a lot of emphasis on educating a large number of people.” Vodden said that training a small number of people could be a more effective use of time since the large group would be diverse and bring many different disciplines together. He felt that a small trained group would be better able to handle the issue. Lass said that Vodden’s concern was valid and that, in between training periods, she hopes that those involved will keep in contact to help better navigate any issues that arise. Vodden also felt that for some issues like economic development, an outside facilitator is often necessary because staff who are trained may have trouble telling their superiors what needs to be done. Council said they would consider the request in the upcoming 2016 budget deliberations. It is the same hand! (J.C. Ryle) “But He said to them: It is I; don’t be afraid!” John 6:20 Are you a distressed believer? Is your heart... pressed down with sickness, tried with disappointments, overburdened with cares? To you I say, “Behold the cross of Christ!”Think whose hand it is that chastens you; think whose hand is measuring to you the ‘cup of bitterness’ which you are now drinking. It is the hand of Him who was crucified! It is the same hand which, in love to your soul, was nailed to the accursed tree! Surely that thought should comfort and hearten you. Surely you should say to yourself, “My crucified Saviour will never lay upon me anything that is not for my good. There is a needs be. It must be well.” “For the Lord disciplines the one He loves, and chastises every son whom he receives.” Hebrews 12:6 A Grace Gem Submitted by: Immanuel United Reformed Church, Listowel, ON 519-291-1956 By Denny Scott The Citizen By Denny Scott The Citizen
