The Brussels Business and
Cultural Centre, the former site of
Brussels Public School, is nearly full
and has begun turning a profit for
Huron East.
Chief Administrative Officer Brad
Knight reported the good news to
councillors at their Aug. 4 meeting,
saying that the centre is on the verge
of becoming self-sufficient, which is
right on schedule.
The Old Colony School, a private
Mennonite school, had been renting
three classrooms in the building,
which was up from its original two,
but asked to rent two more in the
fall. Right before the school year
was set to begin, organizers asked
for another, bringing the total
number of rooms rented by the
school to six. As a result, the former
school building is now, once again,
home to over 90 students and six
teachers – a school that’s serving
nearly 40 families.
This is in addition to the Elections
Canada returning office and the
Brussels Community Bible Chapel.
With the centre’s initial costs paid
down, Knight said, it will soon
provide thousands of dollars of
revenue to the municipality every
month.
While the community was rather
gloomy in the wake of the school
closure, Knight said, it has been
pleasing to see the centre return to
educating children, something with
which Huron East staff is “very
happy”.
With Elections Canada in the
building for the months leading up to
the election, Knight said, the
building is now full.

A good week
It was a good week for the Brussels Legion. First Huron-Bruce MP Ben Lobb informed
members that improvements at the building had been approved for $42,895 of funding for
several accessibility upgrades, including an exterior ramp, a lift and a retrofit to the washrooms,
then they were told they were approved under the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure
Program for $11,920 for improvements to the community hall. From left: Comrade Don

At the Branch
Two grants announced by Lobb
By Jo-Ann McDonald
The Brussels Legion Branch held
the July executive meeting at the end
of the month. Reports from
committees were heard and the ball
park booth report showed about the
same income as previous years. The
help was good with just a few no
shows for the work shifts. Good job
by all.
The Branch was pleased to be the
recipient of an enabling grant after
applying this spring. Huron Bruce
MP Ben Lobb attended the Brussels
Legion on Friday afternoon to make
the presentation. Branch President
Jo-Ann McDonald received the
presentation. Branch members in
attendance included Veterans Ross
Bennett and Cecil Moore, Glenn
Bridge, Eric Ross, Sandra Josling,
Don Chesher, Marg Bennett, and
Jean Bridge. Mr. Lobb also was
pleased to announce the Branch has
also been successful in applying and
receiving a 150th federal
government grant to upgrade the
main hall next spring. Lobb had
another engagement to attend, so left
after the announcement and the
others attending gathered in the
lounge for a small celebration.
It was a very busy weekend at the
Branch. It started on Friday evening
with the fish fry crew heading off to
Mitchell for a large gathering of fish
lovers for the Mitchell Lion’s Club.
The crew consisted of Rick and Jo-
Ann McDonald, Judy Lee, Glenn
Bridge, Mabel Glanville, Sharon
Robbins and Greg Wilson. They fed
over 350 people. Saturday started
with the zone sports meeting for the
13 Branches being held in the
downstairs lounge at 10 a.m.
Following it, the district sports
meeting was held at 11 a.m. for the
possible 51 Branch representatives
to attend. There were about 30
Branches in attendance. The
meetings were completed by 12:30
p.m., just in time for the next event.
The Saturday afternoon euchre
had 11 tables of players. Winners
were: first, tied, John and Iola
Subject and Millie Johnson and
Doreen, 81; second, Ed and Marie
Stewart, 77; third, Ariel Wood and
Pauline Bennett, 75; low, Louise
Hammond and Mary McIntosh, 45;
lone hands, tied, Mary Bell and
Pauline McMichael, five.
Euchre was just finishing up when
the next event began at the Branch.
The Branch is the venue for the
Ambassador competition. The girls
and committee arrived and they
began the preparations for the
evenings event. Interviews, makeup
and speaking with previous
ambassadors, dinner and then it was
time for the evening speeches and
declaration of the winner.
Congratulations to Tiffany Dietner as
the new ambassador for the 2015-
2016 year. The dinner was served by
Branch members Jo-Ann McDonald,
Judy Lee and Mary Bradshaw.
One more event for the day was
the fish fry crew heading to Blyth for
an event. The smaller sized crew of
Eric Ross, Norm Dobson, Randy
White and Murray Lowe fed 125 for
the Blyth Legion for the Festival’s
Bonanza weekend.
The Sunday night dance finished
up the weekend of events. The Tri-
Country Band played for a full
house of 82 dancers. A good job by
Mary, Judy, Nanci, Mabel and John.
Where has the summer gone? For
this house, we know it went to
Edmonton. For others I spoke to, all
the fun things of summer have been
accomplished and so the next few
weeks are free and easy. Good
memories of ball, soccer, music,
water and sun have and will be
marked for the summer of 2015.
Our Philip married Lauren Kyle
on the July 18 in Edmonton, and to
make it even more memorable, Chris
and Lara trusted us with their girls –
aged eight, 13 and 16 in a drive
there. We had a wonderful time,
Ralph even agrees. The humour,
energy and stamina of children is a
marvel. Seeing new scenery
