On Tuesday, July 21, the lower hall of Knox United Church, Belgrave was filled with music and happy voices as the ladies of that church hosted the annual Over 80 birthday party. The day had perfect summer weather and friends from far and wide greeted each other and reminisced. Approximately 60 were in attendance. Nancy Jardin acted as the emcee and welcomed all. The program began with readings about friendship and its importance and a memorial tribute to friends and family who are no longer with us. The introduction was made of special music presented by the The Mayfair Ukulele Band of Lucknow. Their leader Marilyn Scott led the 15 members present in a variety of old favourite songs and the audience was encouraged to join in. She gave information about the instrument, about the formation of the band and a few folks in the audience gave the ukuele a try. Elly Dow, Ruth Gordon and Nancy Jardin presented a skit “There’s a hole in my bucket”. A few jokes ended the program and the band played Happy Birthday to all. Eldest person present was Ross Taylor, 95 years young. Donna Shaw was the person who most recently turned 80 and she had the honour of blowing out the candles on a decorated cake. Refreshments of beverages, cake and ice cream were served by the ladies group. A special surprise was the arrival of four young men who joined in all the fun. One of the young men had a grandmother playing in the band. Ruth Gordon gave a thank you to the ukulele band on behalf of all present.
