Pipe, Newell, Kellington head to softball nationals
They could go all the way
The Chepstow Lang Farms Bantam Lightning U16 softball team recently earned a berth at the
2015 Canadian Softball Championships in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. Securing the team’s
spot in the tournament, which will run Aug. 4-9, required the team to win the Ontario
elimination tournament over 17 other teams. Three Brussels-area players, from left, Jack Pipe,

Three local softball players will be
heading to the 2015 Canadian
Softball Championships in Prince
Albert, Saskatchewan next week.
Jack Pipe, Bennett Newell and
Logan Kellington will be boarding a
plane and heading to Saskatchewan
Aug. 4, along with their teammates
on the Chepstow Lang Farms
Bantam Lightning U16 softball
team, to show off what they can do.
The team had to compete in an
elimination tournament against 17
other teams from across the province
to earn its berth in the championship,
however, the tournament didn’t turn
out to be as tough as the players
imagined.
In an interview with The Citizen,
Newell, a catcher and outfielder who
bats seventh, and Pipe, an outfield
specialist who bats eighth, explained
that they did very well at the
tournament. Kellington, who
couldn’t make the interview, plays
infield.
“We were undefeated throughout
the tournament,” Pipe said.
Newell added that beyond being
undefeated, the team mercied every
one of its opponents.
The Ontario tournament is open to
all teams that wish to participate.
The national championships,
however, have kept the boys curious,
as they haven’t played against any of
the other teams, except the second-
place Ontario team from Glencoe.
Pipe has been playing for the team
for several years while Newell
joined him three years ago after he
was recommended by Pipe’s father
Gary.
The two are excited about the
tournament and are looking forward
to a good experience.
For more information, the team
can be followed on its Facebook
page by searching for the Chepstow
Lang Farms U16 Softball through
the site. The team can also be
followed on Twitter through
@chepstowball.
The games in the championship
will be broadcast live on Softball
Canada at www.softball.ca and the
links will be shared on the above
social media sites.

Brewers maul Grizzlies with four-run rally
Four runs in the bottom of the
sixth inning lifted the Walton
Brewers to a 6-3 decision over the
Goderich Grizzlies on July 22 in
Huron County Fastball League play
at the Walton Ball Park.
Goderich got on the board in the
top of the first inning thanks to a
lead-off home run, followed by two
more runs in the fourth. Walton
scored single runs in the fourth and
fifth innings, before exploding for
four runs in the sixth.
Matt Shortreed and Scott Cox
each had a double and single for the
Brewers, with Liam Melady, Shawn
Bromley and Adam Verkley each
rapping out a pair of singles. Getting
single base hits were Scott
McDonald and Barry Young.
Cox started on the mound for the
Brewers, with McDonald taking
over in relief to earn the victory.
Jeff Robinson of the Brewers said
the bats came alive in the sixth
inning for the Brewers. He added
that McDonald was able to shut
Goderich down after coming on in
relief.
The Brewers played host to the
Belmore Stingers on Tuesday. The
next home game for the Brewers is
Aug. 11 when they host the Brussels
Tigers at 8 p.m. at the Walton Ball
Park.

When it comes to your retirement, it’s important to have an investment portfolio that can
provide you with an appropriate amount of income. This can come from Guaranteed
Investment Certificates and individual bonds, which can help provide a predictable flow of
income.
For stocks and mutual funds, look for those with a history of paying dividends and
increasing them over time – though keep in mind that dividends can be increased,
decreased or totally eliminated at any point without notice. Although equities possess more
risk relative to bonds, their growth potential can help protect against inflation.
Life annuities and Guaranteed Minimum Withdrawal Benefit plans* may be another option
to consider. You would essentially entrust money to an insurance company in exchange for
a guaranteed income stream that will last your lifetime and pay for your necessary living
expenses.
Speak with your financial advisor to create a long-term strategy that can help meet your
needs today and into the future.
