Four vie for Brussels Ambassador sash and crown
On Saturday, Aug. 8, the Brussels
Agricultural Society will have a new
Ambassador for the Fall Fair, with
four contestants all vying for the
prestigious title.
The competition will take place at
the Brussels Legion, with doors
opening at 7 p.m., followed by the
beginning of the competition at 7:30
p.m. Admission is by donation, and
all members of the community are
encouraged to attend.
The first contestant in this year’s
competition is Johanna Blake of
RR2, Brussels, the 17-year-old
daughter of Steve and Kathy Blake.
Johanna loves the 4-H club and
has been a member since 2009 with
the Grey Township club. Since then
she has completed over 12 different
clubs, spanning everything from car
maintenance to baking. She has also
been a member of the North Huron
Sheep Club for four years.
In the fall, Johanna will return to
F.E. Madill Secondary School for
her Grade 12 year.
At F.E. Madill, Johanna is an
active member of her school
community, becoming a peer mentor
to help new students adjust to life at
Madill. In addition, she also tutors
students and was involved with the
school’s recent production of The
Sound of Music.
Her hobbies include playing
soccer and working towards her
black belt in Karate.
Once she graduates secondary
school, Johanna plans to attend
university. She is sponsored by the
Brussels Legion, Branch 218.
Tiffany Deitner of RR1, Brussels
is the second contestant. The 17-
year-old daughter of Kevin and
Alicia is sponsored by Pioneer Hi-
Bred and Brett and Laura Fischer.
Tiffany has already won the Huron
County Ploughing Match’s
2013/2014 Princess competition and
she has been active with 4-H,
spending three years with the 4-H
Sheep Club and one year with the 4-
H Dairy Club.
She has spent her spare time
volunteering with the Wingham
Musical Muskrat Festival, Wingham
fish fry dinners and at a soup kitchen
in Italy. She also enjoys playing
hockey and soccer, both for her
school (F.E. Madill Secondary
School) and for local teams.
In the fall, Tiffany will be
returning to Madill for her Grade 12
year. When she graduates, she plans
to attend college and study to
become a veterinary technician.
The third young lady vying for the
Ambassador crown is Natalie Fear
of RR4, Brussels. The 18-year-old
daughter of Paul and Ann Marie is
the current Huron County Ploughing
Match Princess. She is sponsored by
the Majestic Women’s Institute.
For the past five weeks, Natalie
has been living in Quebec,
completing a French immersion
program at Cegep de Trois-Rivières.
This comes after Natalie graduated
from St. Anne’s Catholic Secondary
School in Clinton as an Ontario
Scholar.
For the rest of the summer, Natalie
plans on working as a lifeguard at
pools in both Wingham and
Brussels. She has been a member of
a local Me to We group, performed
as part of her school’s concert band,
a member of the 4-H Swine Club
and she volunteers at various church
functions.
Natalie’s hobbies include playing
the flute, swimming and playing
broomball.
In the fall, thanks to an entrance
scholarship, Natalie will begin at the
University of Guelph where she’ll
study international development
with a minor in agriculture.
The evening’s fourth and final
contestant will be Chelsey Terpstra,
the 19-year-old daughter of Joe and
Barb of RR3, Brussels.
A graduate of St. Anne’s Catholic
Secondary School, Chelsey is now in
her second year at Ridgetown
College studying agriculture.
Chelsey has been involved with 4-
H clubs for eight years and has been
a contestant in the Huron County
Ploughing Match’s Princess
competition.
In her spare time, Chelsey enjoys
playing rugby, slo-pitch, the guitar
and the piano and she loves to farm.
For the summer, Chelsey has been
working at the Brussels Agromart.
When she graduates from
Ridgetown, Chelsey hopes to pursue
a career as a nutrient management
planner. She is sponsored by the
Huronlea Auxiliary.

NEWS
FROM BRUSSELS
JOHANNA BLAKE TIFFANY DEITNER NATALIE FEAR CHELSEY TERPSTRA
By Jo-Ann McDonald
The days were busy last week at
Brussels Legion Branch with
preparations for the Brussels Tigers
tournament food booth and then for
the tournament itself. The food
required needed to be ordered and
then picked up and sorted, boxed
and put into freezers. Utensils, pots
and pans, trays, pails, paper
products, etc. Everything takes time
to organize and get ready for the big
move to the ball park. The big blue
shack has to be cleaned and moved
to the park. A small army manages
to get the job done and be ready for
the weekend’s work. The set-up
shift, the nine working shifts and the
clean-up shift were all handled by
about 30 volunteer members of the
Branch – a good job by all.
The Saturday afternoon euchre
had 10 tables of happy players.
Winners were: first, Hazel
McGonigle and Janet Davies, 83;
second, Murray Forbes and Hank
Johnston, 74; third, Olave Little and
Marion Harrison, 73; lone hands,
Betty Thompson and Liz Balser;
low, Betty Thompson and Dianne
McGuire.
