McCallum hosts art session
HAHN offers $20 arts courses throughout county
Craft time!
Campaign 14/19 hosted its second annual HuronSound and Arts Festival at the Clinton
Raceway on Saturday and those in attendance were treated to the musical stylings of Three
Forks, which featured guitarist Eric Robertson. The band was joined on stage by saxophonist
Sara McEwan for this song. (Vicky Bremner photo)
A number of classes meant to help
Huron County residents get in touch
with their artistic side will be taking
place over the next few months, all
thanks to the Huron Arts and
Heritage Network (HAHN) and the
County’s Cultural Services
Department.
All classes are being offered for
$20 each, through the initiative,
which encourages residents to “test
drive your creative side”.
Designed with beginners in mind,
the classes require a minimum time
commitment of a maximum of eight
hours.
VISUAL ARTS
One of the first courses is the
“encaustic sampler” which is being
offered in both Brussels and Clinton.
During this four-hour workshop,
students will learn the basics of
working/playing with encaustic
paint. This will include studio safety
and how to mix your paint with the
medium, apply your paint, fuse with
a heat gun, collage, embed objects
and transfer images.
Students will leave the workshop
with a small series of paintings.
Wear old clothes or an apron and if
desired, bring small flat objects to
embed into your artwork.
The course runs from 10 a.m. to 2
p.m. on Aug. 15 at the Brussels
Library and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
on Oct. 17 at the Clinton Library.
Linda Wiebe will be the instructor
for the course. She is a visual artist,
educator and community artist living
in Goderich.
She enjoys sharing her creative
energy in community on her own
and with Worth Their Salt, inspiring
people to engage in and celebrate
their own creative process.
In her studio she is currently
creating sculptures and paintings in
mixed media combined with
encaustic paint; a mixture of
beeswax, damar resin and pigment
applied in the molten state.
Wiebe has a B.A. in Honours Art
from McMaster University and a
Bachelor of Education from the
University of Western Ontario.
Roslyn Cook will teach the
program’s mosaic class at the Alice
Munro Public Library in Wingham.
A two-part course, it begins on Sept.
19 and ends on Sept. 24.
Using stained glass, pottery and
found objects, students will learn the
process of mosaic art. The class will
be done in two parts. In the first part
(four hours) those enroled will learn
to cut the stained glass and break the
china down to workable pieces
(some workable pieces will be
available also). The pieces get glued
to a substrate in a design of the
student’s choice.
In the second class (two hours)
students learn how to apply grout to
their piece to finish it. Please wear
old clothes or bring an apron. All
supplies will be provided unless you
have your own china to bring.
Cook started in stained glass 30
years ago and switched to mosaic
about 10 years ago. She is self-
taught and enjoy working with the
beautiful colours of stained glass as
well as vintage china.
Catherine Weber will instruct the
Oct. 14 plein air painting course,
which will take place at a
conservation area, either in Central
Huron or South Huron.
Weber was born, raised and
educated in the German part of
Switzerland. Creativity was a
cornerstone of her childhood. After
immigrating to Canada in 1992, she
started the journey of fine art.
Catherine paints on a regular basis
in addition to sewing costumes for
the theatre in Stratford and working
on the family-operated dairy farm
near Exeter. Inspired by French
Impressionists (Degas, Renoir,
Toulouse-Lautrec), Catherine finds
portraiture and figure-drawing the
most fascinating subjects. She
enjoys working in different
mediums, but favours pastel.
Exhibiting since 1995, Weber is a
frequent award winner and has
exhibited in over 50 invitational and
juried shows. In 2011 she received
signature status for Pastel Artist
Canada PAC and Master Pastel
Artist Canada MPAC in 2013.
The watercolour course, which
encourages students to paint outside
the lines, will take place at the
Brussels Library on Oct. 24 from 10
a.m. to 2 p.m.
This four-hour workshop will
provide a good foundation and
understanding of watercolour
painting. It is ideal for the individual
who is looking to try watercolour
painting for the first time or for
anyone who is interested in
developing his/her skills and wants
to bring more life and
expressiveness into their painting.
The focus will be to explore the
following elements of painting:
light, vibrancy of colour and
composition.
The course’s instructor will be
Michele Miller, who was a featured
On July 30, accomplished artist
Devon McCallum will lead beginner
painters and art fans through an
upbeat, social, and informal painting
session at the Huron County
Museum from 6 - 8:30 p.m. She
will teach participants in detail
how to paint a mallard duck –
spotted on the Hullett Marsh – on a
piece of locally-sourced driftwood.
Each beginner will learn the basics
of brush strokes and blending
colours and go home with their
own art piece on an unconventional
driftwood canvas, unlike many
conventional art pieces.
Relax and have fun with your
friends at a casual and lively night at
the museum. The event includes
breaks for participants to enjoy
complimentary snacks, a cash bar
and the chance to peruse ‘Our
Feathered Friends,’ the museum’s
current temporary exhibit on loan
from the Museum of Nature in
Ottawa.
The Paint-Along is sponsored by
the Goderich Co-op Gallery and
hosted by the Huron County
Museum, and celebrates the Our
Feathered Friends exhibit, as well as
the Co-Op Gallery’s current Bill
Gallow Bird Show, ‘For the Birds.’
Spaces are limited, but interested
aspiring artists can call 519-524-
2686 ext. 213 to pre-register.
Admission to the event is $15 or $10
for Huron County Museum
members.
