Total receipts for Brussels Livestock for the week ending July 17 were 1,293 cattle and 634 lambs and goats. On Tuesday fed steers and heifers sold on a very active trade at $1 to $2 higher. Choice steers and heifers sold $196 to $201 with sales to $214.24. Second cut sold $191 to $196. Aged and medium fed steers and heifers sold $182 to $189. Cows sold on a strong active trade. On Thursday beef veal calves and heavy holsteins calves sold at steady prices. Lambs and sheep sold steady to last week while goats sold steady. On Friday calves sold actively at fully steady prices. Yearlings sold $3 to $5 higher. Chris Smith of Brussels, consigned seven steers that averaged 1,586 lbs. and sold for an average price of $207.83. Two limousin steers averaged 1,588 lbs. and sold to Horizon Meat Packers for $214.25. Les Coleman of Kippen, consigned nine cattle that averaged 1,381 lbs. and sold for an average price of $196.57. Two black steers averaged 1,395 lbs. and sold to Norwich Packers for $202. Southlore Farms Ltd. of Palmerston, consigned 15 cattle that averaged 1,323 lbs. and sold for an average price of $194.50. Two heifers averaged 1,305 lbs. and sold to Horizon Meat Packers for $210. Mike Hern of Woodham, consigned one limousin heifer that weighed 1,100 lbs. and sold to Norwich Packers for $203. There were 226 cows on offer. Export types sold $120 to $125 with sales to $134; beef, $135 to $145 with sales to $152; D1 and D2, $115 to $120; D3, $105 to $115; D4, $85 to $105. Andrew Lowry consigned one black cow that weighed 1,795 lbs. and sold for $152. There were eight bulls selling $150 to $185. Greg McGillivray consigned one black bull that weighed 2,270 lbs. and sold for $185. There were 134 head of veal on offer. Beef sold $195 to $228 with sales to $261; good holsteins, $155 to $165 with sales to $171; medium holsteins, $140 to $150; heavy holsteins, $150 to $160. Lamar Frey of Listowel, consigned 10 calves that averaged 918 lbs. and sold for an average price of $213.29. One blue heifer weighed 810 lbs. and sold for $261. Sunnydale Acres Ltd. of Ailsa Craig, consigned five steers that averaged 888 lbs. and sold for an average price of $213.02. One blue steer weighed 820 lbs. and sold for $244. Larry Bowman of Gowanstown, consigned one blue steer that weighed 890 lbs. and sold for $224. Paul B. Bowman of Lucknow, consigned three calves that averaged 875 lbs. and sold for an average price of $218.66. One limousin heifer weighed 860 lbs. and sold for $223. Lambs, 50 - 64 lbs. sold $239 to $294; 65 - 79 lbs., $233 to $285; 80 - 94 lbs., $185 to $211; 95 - 110 lbs., $178 to $195/lb. Sheep sold $100 to $155. Goats: kids sold $180 to $295; nannies, $77 to $190; billies, $200 to $250/lb. Top quality stocker steers under 400 lbs. sold $397.50 to $400; 400 - 499 lbs., $324 to $410; 500 - 599 lbs., $355 to $425; 600 - 699 lbs., $324 to $350; 700 - 799 lbs., $295 to $309; 800 - 899 lbs., $258 to $270; $258 to $270; 900 - 999 lbs., $251 to $259; 1,000 lbs. and over, $233 to $238. Top quality stocker heifers, 300 - 399 lbs. sold to $360; 400 - 499 lbs., $320 to $375; 500 - 599 lbs., $311 to $330; 600 - 699 lbs., $286 to $297; 700 - 799 lbs., $266 to $278; 800 - 899 lbs., $239 to $250; 900 lbs. and over, $225 to $236. Wide open spaces, sprawling fields and no neighbours within reach are some of the best parts of living in the country. Unfortunately, there can be a downside to this rural living. Unwanted trespassers. Fields and farming buildings can be tough to keep a close eye on, and that opens the door to break-ins, unwanted visitors and vandalism. Every year farmers and rural landowners in Ontario come face to face with unwelcome traffic – individuals who take advantage of open, sometimes secluded spaces that make up our rural countryside. If you just look at the statistics, rural property crime rates are lower than in urban areas. But the implications of trespassing, vandalism, garbage dumping, animal activism and crop damage can be much more than just a nuisance.
