The Blyth Business Improvement
Area (BIA) is still looking towards
the possibility of placing parkettes in
front of local businesses.
The structures, which would
enable seating in front of
restaurants, have been proposed for
two local restaurants for several
years and, with just one final hurdle
left, according to North Huron
Township representatives, some
caution is being aired about the
benefit of the structures.
During the BIA’s July 8 meeting,
North Huron Township Chief
Administrative Officer Sharon
Chambers stated there is one
outstanding issue from the
township’s perspective, that being a
line in the original engineer’s report
that stated the structures, which will
be placed on the street in front of
businesses, would require an
engineer’s report before they could
be permitted to be placed.
“We like to make sure these things
are carried through,” she said. “I
have e-mailed [the engineering firm
responsible] to try and get this piece
moved forward but I haven’t heard
back yet.”
Gary van Leeuwen, who chaired
the meeting in the absence of Chair
Rick Elliott and Vice Chair Peter
Gusso, asked if that meant the
project was on hold.
“Yes,” Chambers said. “But we’re
going to look into that.”
North Huron Councillor Bill
Knott said that, once the issue was
handled at the township level, it
would need to be referred to Huron
County staff who maintain the road.
Later on in the meeting, executive
member Lissa Kolkman mentioned
that several people had come in to
her place of work complaining about
parking problems and asked if the
parkettes could increase parking
problems.
“Parking is already a huge issue,”
she said. “When the Blyth Festival is
running plays, people are looking
for parking and we’re talking about
the parkettes taking up two more

Happy birthday to Hayden
Diebold who celebrates July 25 and
Kesley Kerr, July 28. Happy
anniversary to Deb and Fred
Hakkers, who celebrate July 24.
The village was saddened last
week to hear of the death of
Margaret Kai who passed away on
Tuesday, July 14. Her funeral was
held on Saturday at Blyth United
Church.
Don’t forget to come out on
Saturday, July 25 and enjoy the fun
at Blyth Streetfest. Come see
whether it will be Bill Knott, Susie
Elliott or Shawn Loughlin who will
kiss the pig. There will be music,
entertainment, food, artisans, a
vendors’ market and antique car
show all on main street from noon
until 5 p.m.
I, along with other members of my
family, attended the Listowel Fair
where my granddaughter Heidi
Martin and her students were
participating in the horse show. They
came home with some ribbons. The
fair had many farm animals, a tractor
pull and of course a midway. The
sun stayed behind the clouds for the
morning so it wasn’t too hot.
Everyone had a good time.

The Clinton Raceway was the place to be on Saturday for the second annual HuronSound and
Arts Festival, carried out under the watchful eye of Campaign 14/19. The event, which runs for
over eight hours, is aimed at encouraging young musicians to take to the stage, while also
learning about how to break into the music business and to get their band’s music out there.
Here, Three Forks performs on the stage, following the beat provided by drummer Dan
Pavkeje. (Vicky Bremner photo)
