Weather problems pale when compared to forest fires
The cool and wet weather of last
week is forgotten with the hot
temperatures this week. Corn made
knee-high by July and some bean
fields are starting to fill out and look
much better. Unfortunately, some
white bean fields are looking a little
sad and I think I have seen fields not
even planted. The joy of a dry, early
spring has been dampened by the
continuous rain the last few weeks.
Spraying for weeds has worked in
many fields, while in others the
weeds are getting ahead of the crops.
Milkweed, burdocks and vetch are a
troublesome weed for many. Just
part of the trials and tribulations a
farmer has to deal with during the
course of a cropping year.
We really shouldn’t complain that
much, considering the plight of
many dealing with forest fires across
the country. From British Columbia
to Saskatchewan, raging fires have
destroyed acres and acres of forests
and homes.
Rick and I have just returned from
a trip to Calgary to see McDonald
family members. When we were
picked up from the airport by our
nephew Mike, he had some bad
news for us. Rick’s brother Neil had
been admitted to hospital. He had a
severe gall bladder attack and
abdominal infection and has spent
10 days in a Calgary Hospital. We
went to the hospital to visit him three
times during our five days away. He
was finally released on Saturday
morning and flew home to
Vancouver Saturday evening.
Our arrival was just in time to have
a visit with Mike and wife Chrissy
and their children, Sydney and
Brycen, before they left to attend a
soccer tournament in Kelowna for
the weekend. Then they were
heading for a vacation resort for the
next week, so the night and next
morning made for a very short visit.
Rick and I tackled the Calgary
Transit system the next morning and
headed into downtown Calgary to
our hotel. Going to the Calgary
Stampeders vs. Hamilton Tiger Cats
football game Friday night was on
the planned agenda. We met up with
our niece’s husband, Lucho and his
friend and went to the game. It was a
great game, but Hamilton lost by
one.
We were able to go see Neil on
Saturday afternoon and found him to
be a very sick fellow. Niece Kendra
and Lucho picked us up from the
hospital and we went to their place
for a barbecue with Rick’s sister
Karen. We spent time at the huge
CrossIron Mills shopping centre and
touring the downtown area of
Calgary. All the shops were busy
decorating and getting ready for the
start of the Stampede.
Brenda Bewley Raven then came
and picked us up and we went to
Airdrie to visit with Jean Bewley on
Monday. Jean lives in a lovely
complex that has 85 residents and
her apartment is lovely. She is a 10-
minute walk to Brenda’s, grandson
John and family and about 15
minutes to downtown and church.
She really loves it and is very happy.
Brussels folks will have a chance to
catch up with Jean, when her and
Brenda come to Brussels the last
week of July!
Rick and I had dinner with Brian
and Linda Mark as well as having a
tour of the city and a ride to the
airport when we left. The dinner we
had with the Brian and Linda was at
a Brazilian restaurant. What an
experience. There was a salad bar
plus a hot food buffet, with no meat.
Waiters came around to the tables
with a variety of skewers of meat
and would cut a slice of meat onto
your plate. They served or you could
choose prime rib, pork ribs, chicken
wings, sausage, lamb, beef ribs,
chicken hearts and steaks, some or
all of the above. It was quite a meal.
We spent some time at Karen’s and
had dinner with her on our last night
in town.
Graeme, Helen and Michael Craig,
Shannon and Dave Soonteins spent
the weekend in Haliburton. They
were attending the 50th wedding
anniversary party for Helen’s sister,
Emily and Scott LaRue Helen’s
other sister, Mary Elliott of
Vancouver is also home at this time
and attended the celebration.
Audrey Hackwell is now in
hospital in St. Mary’s. Gerry and
Anne Ryan went and had a visit with
her and we hope she will show some
improvement soon.
Congratulations to Fred and Heidi
McClure on becoming first-time
grandparents. They are overjoyed
with the arrival of baby Colton, the
son of daughter Jennifer and Marco
Van Driel. Congrats to all!
Our get well wishes go to Joan
Bernard who has suffered a broken
hip. We hope she comes along
quickly. Howard Bernard is waiting

developable land in Walton or not,
that the last home built in Walton
was 40 years ago.
Council decided to try and work
with both Glanville and the two
landowners by offering the portion
of the road allowance that split
Glanville’s field to him and dividing
the part between the de Vries and
Gagnier property between them.
At Deputy-Reeve Jamie Heffer’s
suggesiton, several plots of land on
Glanville’s farm that were of a
developable size and fronted on the
county roads in Walton would have
the deeming bylaw removed to allow
him to develop.
Council was told by Huron
County Planner Susannah Reid,
however, that a report from the
Huron County regarding removing
the deeming bylaw could return
back to council to see what would be
necessary for the move.
A motion to close all of Lewis
Street, which runs parallel to
Brussels Line north from County
Road 25 and lift the deeming mark
on several lots on those two roads
was tabled until that information can
be presented.
Lewis Street decision
held over for review
The Walton Raceway had a
practice day on Saturday and the
Steel City Riders of Hamilton had
the track on Sunday for their race
day.
Welcome to Ontario to Joanne and
Weldon Black, who are back to visit
Dad, Jack Knight and brothers Brad
and Steve and families. They usually
come every summer for a two-week
or so holiday and have a busy
schedule while here. Hopefully, they
get around to visit one and
all and have lots of time with
dad!
Our hopes and prayers are with the
Dwayne and Karen Pryce and family
as they deal with a health issue in the
family. Their seven-year-old
daughter, Rebecca, is dealing with
neuroblastoma, and is undergoing
treatments. She is being a very brave
little girl and the family has high
praise for the Ronald McDonald
House in London. Monies are being
raised through www.gofundme.com/
RallyingforBecca? Our prayers are
with the Pryce family.
Make sure your mark your
calendar for the outdoor service for
Duff’s United Church to be held at
the retreat at Paul and Dianne
McCallum’s. The service will be on
Sunday, July 19 at 10 a.m. and a
barbecue lunch will follow. You are
asked to bring lawn chairs, salad and
dessert. Parking is along the line of
trees and golf carts will shuttle you
to the back of the property. Let’s all
hope for a beautiful day!
