Nelemans, Smuck clash over burn bylaw
Continued from page 1
Councillor Jim Nelemans calling the
bylaw a necessity.
“People seem to think that
[Morris-Turnberry Fire Prevention
Officer] James Marshall is out to get
everyone, but he didn’t invent this,”
Nelemans said. “He got this from
other municipalities where it’s work-
ing fine. He’s just trying to do what
is necessary.”
Smuck, however, felt Nelemans
was off the mark and was aggravated
at the suggestion of the bylaw being
put in place.
“I know how these bylaws work,”
he said. “They aren’t pretty when
you’re on the other end of them
when you get into court. People
don’t always tell the truth. If people
are going to be normal individuals,
then we’re fine, but people have
problems and that’s why I’m defend-
ing them here.”
Smuck stated he is concerned peo-
ple are going to call in fires not
because they are dangerous, but for
personal reasons.
“I’m scared people are going to
call in because [they don’t like one
of their neighbours]” he said.
“They’re not going to call in for
safety, they’re going to call in to get
people in trouble.”
Smuck then pointed out that, for a
full year, there were no fire calls in
the area of Morris-Turnberry cov-
ered by the Huron East Fire
Department in Brussels.
“Why do we need this?” he asked.
“Let’s just put a fine on this thing.
Rules aren’t going to make people
burn safe, but money will. I know
I’m going to watch these things
much closer if it could cost me
$5,000.”
The bylaw was deferred until
council’s next meeting.
The Higgins family reunion was
held Sunday, June 28 at the Belgrave
Community Centre.
President Donna Barger welcomed
guests from near and far. There were
22 in attendance.
A minute of silence was held for
those who have departed. A discus-
sion was held as to the next reunion
and the decision was made to leave it
open for now with a decision to be
made at a later date.
The prizes this year were for the
oldest lady, Ruth King; oldest
man, Glen Van Camp;
youngest child, Jackson Davenport.
Grace was delivered by Joel
Hawley. A delicious potluck
dinner was enjoyed by all.
Thanks to the lunch committee of
Ross and Wilma Higgins and leader-
ship from Donna Barger for
all their hard work putting every-
thing together.

achieved by allowing underdevel-
oped countries to increase their own
agricultural productivity. It will
increase their employment, produc-
tion and consumption. It is like the
adage, “If you want to feed someone
for a day, give him a fish. If you
want to feed him for a lifetime, teach
him to fish.”
We don’t need to feed the world.
We need to let the world to feed itself.
