Happy anniversary to Kerry and Devin Diebold who celebrate July 8. Milestones celebrated THE EDITOR, I would like to comment on the Bill Knott Letter to the Editor from June 11. My wife and I moved to North Huron (Belgrave) a couple of years ago. We like the area, but specifically avoided Wingham due to its high tax rate. Living in a rural or semi-rural area is a choice, and, along with that choice, is the fact that there are limitations to the services available – policing being one. Comparing the cost of the existing OPP agreement with Blyth and East Wawanosh Wards and the costs of expanding the Wingham Police Services (WPS) into those wards, is like comparing apples to rocks as Mr. Knott explained. To be fair to all parties, residents included, the comparison should be between service of the township as a whole by both the OPP and WPS. Whatever the outcome of the investigation is, an open discussion with the ratepayers should be held, especially in advance of any implementation if the costs for one area increases, to the benefit of another. As for the comment that a couple of extra officers and a cruiser will make the community more attractive to potential new residents, lowering North Huron’s current tax rate would do that. Sincerely, J. Brown. Letters to the Editor Lower taxes needed, not more police: writer Collision with deer claims passenger, closes road A section of Huron County Road 4 between Summerhill Road and Winthrop Road was closed off on June 24 as a fatal accident was investigated and cleared off the road. Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), the Central Huron Fire Department and Huron County Emergency Medical Services responded to the crash just after 3:30 a.m. According to OPP, a Nissan Quest minivan was travelling southbound on County Road 4 when the vehicle collided with a deer causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle, veer off the roadway and come to rest on its wheels in a shallow creek. Of the five male occupants of the vehicle, Errol Brown of London, who was in the third row of passenger seating in the vehicle, died as a result of the collision. The other four occupants, including the driver, were also from London and were transported to hospitals with non-life threatening or minor injuries. The road was re-opened the afternoon of the incident. Anyone with information about the collision should contact Huron OPP at 1-888-310-1122. Fatal collision One person is dead and several others were injured after a Nissan Quest mini-van hit a deer and veered off the road into a ditch on June 24. One passenger died as a result of his injuries while the other four were admitted to hospital with varying degrees of non-life threatening injuries. (Denny Scott photo) Bad luck The Blyth Legion’s Elimination Draw was held on Saturday and, unfortunately for her, just after spelling her name out for The Citizen, Elaine Fraser, left, drew her own ticket on a non-winning square. Eerily, her ticket number (36) also matched her place in the order of tickets drawn. It was up to Legion President Ric McBurney, right, to put the tickets on the board.
