Smith named a UWO Mustang
Lexi Smith of Brussels has
beennamed to the University of
Western Ontario Mustangs Women’s
Rugby 2015 recruiting class.
Smith graduated from St. Anne’s
Catholic Secondary School this year
and, over the course of her school
athletic career, has been awarded the
Varsity Rugby Team MVP, Junior
Athlete of the Year, Senior Athlete of
the Year and the Coaches Award.
She was also the captain of her
hockey, soccer and rugby teams.
The Western Mustangs women’s
rugby team earned a bronze finish at
the 2014 Canadian Interuniversity
Sport (CIS) Championship.
Smith joined the class alongside
four other girls: Veronica Harrigan
of Lucan, Taylor Merrrithew of
Kingston, Gemma Olds of
Thorndale and Brooke Boulerice of
Cobourg.
Western Head Coach Natascha
Wesch said she was excited to have
the opportunity to sign Smith and
her fellow classmates.
“To be able to have these five
athletes choose Western and commit
to the rugby program is of great
importance to our Mustang family,”
she said in a press release from
Western University.”We have a
strong foundation to work with in
our veteran group and to provide
such important depth to our roster
with these outstanding recruits
bodes well for the future of our
program.”
Smith said, in the same release,
that she was excited about the
opportunity this represented.
“I knew it was the right fit because
of the intensity and dynamics of the
program along with the
inclusiveness and attitude of the
team,” she said, having visited the
school. “The atmosphere on and off
the field was amazing and whenever
I come to campus I always feel safe
and like I am at home. With that
being said, I cannot wait to begin my
future career as a Western Mustang
athlete and student.”

Nine up, nine down for Sebastian
A bases-loaded double by Jason
Kellington in the bottom of the sixth
inning scored three runs as the
Brussels Tigers came from behind to
defeat the Belmore Stingers 6-4 in a
Huron County Fastball League
contest on June 24 at the Optimist
Ball Park in Brussels.
After three scoreless innings, the
Stingers put four runs across the
plate in the top of the fourth inning,
but the Tigers responded with three
of their own in the bottom half of the
inning, thanks in part to a two-run
home run by Steve Scholl.
Shawn Daw started on the mound
for the Tigers and managed three
strike outs in four innings of work.
Ty Sebastian took over for the final
three innings and faced nine batters,
striking out all nine.
Kris Wright went the distance on
the mound for the Stingers and
recorded three strike outs.
Sebastian had a triple and single at
the plate and Adam Corbett
contributed a triple. Shawn Daw
rapped out a pair of singles.
Daw said it was a good game for
the Tigers. “We battled back and we
were hitting the ball well,” he said.
“It was a good game all around.”
The Tigers were in Sebringville
on June 25 and then travel to
Fullarton on Sunday for a 7 p.m.
contest against the A’s.
