precious dad, grandpa and great-
grandpa, Ralph Caldwell who
passed away June 30, 1999.
Memory is a lovely lane,
Where hearts are ever true,
A lane we so often travel down,
Because it leads to you.
Your presence we miss,
Your memory we treasure,
Loving you always,
Forgetting you never.
– Love, your family. 25-1p

Taking a step back
The Jam Jar Pub and Eatery owner Jeff Miller hosted a cruise night in Brussels last Friday
night. The event brought more than 50 cars to the village and had them not only cruise the
streets, but also line up so people could get a closer look and, in some cases, a hands-on
experience with the machines of yester-year. The event started up as the weekly Brussels
Farmers’ Market was winding down. (Vicky Bremner photo)
Huron County took the first step
in the creation of county-wide
economic development last week as
a united front presented itself to
council at its June 17 committee of
the whole meeting.
Presented by Jim Lynn, chair of
the Huron County Economic
Development Board, and lower-tier
economic development officers
from throughout Huron County, the
county-wide strategic planning
project will begin on Aug. 26 with
the group’s first session. As part of
the session, those involved will
prepare for strategic planning and
develop the regional shared vision
for economic development within
those shared goals.
Using a model developed by the
Ontario Ministry of Agriculture,
Food and Rural Affairs, the initiative
aims to break down silos, align
municipalities’ goals and minimize
costs associated with economic
development.
Vicki Lass and Helen Scott told
council that there will be no
additional costs to the county as a
result of the program, just requests
for staff time and resources over the
course of the next year.
One of the project’s steps will be
performance measurement, which is
crucial, the participants say.
After the initial preparation, the
second meeting, scheduled for Sept.
16, will consist of analyzing
information and developing goals.
The third meeting, scheduled for
Oct. 7, will measure performance,
while the fourth and final meeting at
the end of October will involve
action planning, implementation
and monitoring.

issue for Huron-Bruce MPP Lisa
Thompson.
MacLellan said that may be an
option, but reminded McGrath that
G2G Inc. is a private company that
is, for the most part, free to do as it
pleases without any direct affiliation
with any level of government.
“We have no say – one way or the
other,” said McGrath.
MacLellan told the group that
there has been very little
consultation at the county level and
that to his knowledge, no county
money had been allocated to assist
with the trail.
He was, however, corrected on
that point by Margaret Vincent, local
member service representative for
the Ontario Federation of
Agriculture, who said that there is a
line item in the Planning
Department’s budget for $16,800 for
a contract position.
MacLellan confirmed Vincent’s
comments the following day at a
meeting of Huron County Council,
when Director of Planning and
Development Scott Tousaw told
council that the money has been set
aside for a part-time position
associated with the trail.
Both councils accepted the
presentation and told the groups of
concerned landowners that
they would take their comments
into consideration.
