CCRC announces first four courses, registration open
The heat from down under
The Brussels Optimist Ball Park played host to the
Australian National Fastball Team, which was taking on a
‘Select’ fastball team from the Huron County Fastball
League last Wednesday night in a double-header. The
Australian team proved they were ready for the upcoming
International Softball Federation men’s championship in
Saskatoon starting June 26 by beating their competition in
both friendly games. The team is coached by Laing Harrow
who grew up with Brussels resident Paul Sebastian in
Milverton. The team was billeting in Milverton until the
championship and Sebastian set up the games to show the
calibre of softball available in the world. The Aussies won
both games by scores of 12-0 and 6-1. (Denny Scott photo)
Earlier this month Peter Smith,
Project Director of Blyth Arts &
Cultural Initiative 14/19 Inc.
announced four pilot programs
being offered through the Canadian
Centre for Rural Creativity.
“We have some extremely skilled
people who want to share their
talent,” said Smith. “Learn new
skills or hone existing ones. This
promises to be a lot of fun,” he said.
The first is photography, taught by
Heather Morton, Art
Buyer/Photographer/Educator at
Sheridan’s celebrated photography
school for students 12 - 19 years of
age.
Photography has long been a
useful tool for self-definition,
empowerment, reflection and
communication. During the
workshops students will be charged
with telling their own stories through
a series of photographic challenges
from multiple genres. They will be
inspired by the work of other
photographers and of their peers,
who are working on similar themes.
Plus, they will learn how to use
blogging platforms to share their
work farther afield. The workshop
will culminate in a show to celebrate
their efforts and to share their work
with the general public.
Two, one-week sessions are being
offered: Introductory Course for
$125 – July 6-10 and Advanced
$150 - July 13-17. Students require a
smartphone and a camera that has
some manual functionality. Classes
are limited to 10 students so sign up
early at the 14/19 website.
The second is fashion arts taught
by Designer/Educator Jennifer
Triemstra-Johnston, who will be
leading a Fashion Arts and Textile
Studio. Learn the basics of applying
paint to fabric, create polymer bead
and chain bracelets, draft and
manipulate patterns for your own
personal fashion designs and
discover the art of silk painting.
Learn all about sustainable fashion
and develop business skills that will
assist with you marketing your own
small craft or creative business.
Over two weeks in July, two to
three courses are scheduled each
day. Weekly, daily and individual
class rates are available, with some
courses created specifically for
youth. A full printable calendar is
available on the website.
The third course is photo-
journalism. In early September,
students over 16 years of age will
explore photo-journalism, led by
local award-winning journalist
Denny Scott. Photography
techniques that employ images in
order to tell a news story include
taking great action shots. Students
will be enjoying the local Huron
Pioneer Thresher and Hobby
Association’s annual reunion
through the eyes of a photographer
this September.
The fourth is documentary
filmmaking. Throughout the
summer, five documentary
filmmakers are working with Faux
Pop Media’s Randall Lobb and
Mark Hussey exploring traditional
music in Huron County. In 2015,
this project is developed through a
partnership with Huron Arts &
Heritage Network, Huron County
Cultural Services, Imagine South
Huron and the Blyth Festival.
Registration is open now. E-mail

that society consists of many
different roles and no one is perfect.
Ergo, fathers and mothers can only
strive to do their best when rearing
children. Being present and caring
set the best examples for their
children while training and loving
them. Parents can turn to the
guidelines offered by God in the
Bible. His words guide parents and
children through life.
Terry ended his message by
reading “When I Was”. These
thoughts about dad by a son changed
as the son grew up.
During next Sunday’s service,
June 28, Londesborough United will
hold a covenanting service for Rev.
Fletcher. Lunch and a time of
fellowship will follow the service.
This will be the last Sunday service
until August. The Londesborough
congregation will be on holidays
during the month of July.
The Ball’s Cemetery Decoration
Service will be held on Sunday, July
5 at 2 p.m. Rev. Fletcher will be the
speaker and the Harbouraires of
Goderich will provide special music.
