Those who attended
Londesborough United Church on
Sunday, June 14 were treated to an
interesting and heartwarming
service conducted by the Sunday
School. Congregants were met by
young folk greeting, ushering and
generally being welcoming. A
number of young piano pupils
shared their musical talent as folk
gathered in the pews. A Sunday
school graduate, Quinn Whyte, was
in charge of the power point
showcasing the children and their
activities over the year.
Individual youth led parts of the
service: Elianna and Audrey
Kreuger, Garret Whyte, Braden
Radford and Jared Bergsma.
Under the direction of Barb
Bosman, all the children, some two
dozen of them, joined their voices in
song. They sang “Songs of Praise to
the King of Kings” and “What I
Am”. This fun second song was
written by Sesame Street actor,
“Well I Am”.
As they sang they told listeners
about their character and held up
words to reinforce these traits, like
musical, smart, grouchy, proud,
friendly, etc.
Sandy Bergsma and Kerri Whyte
recognized, with a gift, each of the
children who attend Sunday school
and thanked the many helpers and
teachers who gave their time over
the past year. The congregation also
showed its appreciation for having
this Sunday school part of their faith
community.
During the message part of the
morning service, Crystal Whyte and
the children shared some of their
Science Sundays experiments. These
Sundays are intended to connect
Bible stories with today’s world. The
premise of the first experiment was
to show how asking God for help in
a difficult time works. This
experiment using five small stones
correlated with the David and
Goliath story.
The children are taught that God
forgives our sins and cleanses us if
we go to Him in prayer. Each of the
children, those who had sinned,
added a drop of food colouring to a
bowl of clear water. Then Crystal
added a chlorine liquid to the bowl
and the water cleared.
Christians are taught that God has
given each of us gifts/talents which
He hopes we will use in His service.
However sometimes we need help to
discover and grow those talents.
Yeast became the catalyst or help
that expanded and made the water in
a large bottle overflow.
The adults were just as intrigued
by these experiments as were the
children.
The sacrament of baptism will be
administered next Sunday, June 21.
The following week part of the
morning service will be a
Covenanting Service for Rev. Terry
Fletcher. There will be no services at
Londesborough United during July.

Hullett students travel to plane museum
Have we had enough rain yet?
Would be nice to find a day to cut the
grass.
Puzzle this for the coming week.
Where did the term ‘sleep tight’
originate?
In a recent column, I commented
on the number of activities taking
place for the children at Hullett
Central this month. I did some arm-
twisting of a grandson, Braden, who
visited the airplane museum near
Hamilton last Monday. He offered
the following account of the trip.
On June 8, the Grade 5/6 and 6/7
pupils travelled to Mount Hope to
the Canadian War Plane Heritage
Museum. There were several
other school groups there that day as
well.
Upon arrival we were divided into
two groups and sent to different
classrooms. We learned about the
four forces of flight and did two
experiments. One experiment was
about molecules and the other was
about water and air. Later we looked
at all the planes and learned what
types they were, for example,
Spitfire.
After lunch we heard a story about
two Canadians who received
Victoria Crosses for their part in
World War II, Andrew Mynarski and
John Hornell. Mynarski received his
for his flights in a Lancaster. We
learned that the Lancaster on display
for years at the Goderich airport is
one of two left in the world. Last
summer that plane flew to Britain to
fly alongside the other preserved
plane.
Consequently they realized the
engine was in trouble and are now
fixing it in Hamilton. We saw that
airplane.
Outside the museum we looked at
the Buffalo, a plane that was shot
down in World War II with nine
people aboard. At some point the
museum had a fire. The airplane
known as the Hurricane was the only
plane that did not survive the fire.
We saw a model of that plane. The
last activity we did was to make
paper gliders.

The Jump Rope for Heart event was held at Hullett Central
Public School last month and students like Andrew Fleming
shown above, got to participate in special events like an
obstacle course instead of sitting through class on a very
warm day. (Denny Scott photo)
Bergsmas celebrate 50 years
Bruce and Marie Bergsma
celebrated their 50th wedding
anniversary on Saturday with a
group of family and friends at the
family farm on Londesboro Road.
It was on June 5, 1965 that Marie
Otten, the daughter of Albertje and
Marinus of Wellandport, married
Bruce Bergsma, the son of Hullett
Township’s Johanna and Michael
Salverda, and Bauke Bergsma, who
died prior to Bruce’s birth.
The wedding took place in
Vineland and was presided over by
Rev. Noordegraaf. The couple’s
attendants were Ineke Pennings
(Brouwer), Arend Otten, Nellie Pol
(Salverda), Betty Otten (Salverda),
Jo-anne Lubbers (Salverda), Ralph
Vandekamp and Lewie Pol.
The Bergsmas lived in Dunnville
after their wedding, before moving
to Hullett Township in 1972.
Bruce worked as a herdsman and
farmed before working at Radford’s
Farm Equipment and the Hensall
Co-op, all while continuing to work
on the home farm. Marie spent her
days also working on the farm, while
also taking care of the family home
and their children. Both retired in
December, 2010.
Bruce and Marie had nine children
(five boys and four girls) and 29
grandchildren.
Both Bruce and Marie volunteered
a lot of their time – Bruce with the
Ontario Federation of Agriculture
Board, the Ontario Pork Congress,
the Huron County Pork Producers
and Hullett Township Council, while
Marie performed as a member of the
Blyth Festival Singers, volunteered
with OneCare and was a dedicated
United Church Women (UCW)
member.
Bruce and Marie first moved to
Hullett Township in May, 1972. In
the first year they lived on the farm,
the barn burned down. The couple
suffered animal loss in the
November 1972 fire, but in
December they started to rebuild.
Within two months a new barn had
been built and sows and pigs were
coming in already.
Over the next several years, the
farm continued to expand. It was at
that time that Bruce and Marie began
to raise their family, all while still
working and remaining well-
respected contributers to their
community.
Within the last five years they have
retired and recently moved off of the
home farm on Londesboro Road,
moving into Londesborough.
The couple marked the milestone
with a special celebration at the
home family farm with their family
and friends, with guests coming
from as far away as Warren, Ontario.
