Madill students compete at OFSAA track and field
The largest track and field meet in
North America was held at The
University of Toronto’s Varsity
Centre June 4-6 and three F.E.
Madill Secondary School students
were there to represent their school.
With over 3,000 athletes in
attendance, the Ontario Federation
of School Athletic Associations
(OFSAA) meet is generally
considered to be the largest of its
kind across the continent.
After competing in three
qualifying meets that grow
progressively more difficult, only
the best 24 athletes in the province in
each event actually make it to
OFSAA.
This season, F.E. Madill
Secondary School had three athletes
who competed at this highest level.
Justin McKague, in his fourth
consecutive OFSAA, cleared the
high jump bar in the Senior boys
event with an impressive 1.95 metre
leap, tying his personal best, to earn
a fifth place finish.
Teammate Jessica Johnston
competed in the Midget girls
division at her first OFSAA
championship and made her best
high jump of the season, reaching a
height of 1.50 metres to earn seventh
overall.
In the Junior boys discus event,
Ben Newell, in his second year at
OFSAA, placed in the top half of the
performances with a throw of 42.39
metres to earn 11th place.
The OFSAA tournament marks
the end of the high school track and
field season for the team, however,
several younger athletes competed at
the District C Royal Canadian
Legion track and field meet in
Kincardine over the weekend. The
tournament is for athletes 17 years
old and younger.

Five runs in the top of the fifth
inning allowed the Fullarton A’s to
break open a close contest, as they
coasted to a 14-6 decision over the
Walton Brewers in a game played at
the Optimist Ball Park in Seaforth
last Saturday evening.
Fullarton scored four more runs in
the top of the seventh to secure the
victory. The A’s score three runs in
the top of the first, with the Brewers
replying with one in the bottom half
of the inning. Walton took the lead
in the second inning by putting three
runners across the plate. Fullarton
regained the lead in the top of the
third inning as they scored a pair of
runs. The Brewers regained the
advantage in the fourth inning as
they scored two to take a 6-5 lead.
The A’s then scored five in the fifth
and four in the seventh to put the
game away.
Matt Shortreed connected for a
triple for the Brewers. Darryl
Houston and Shawn Bromley each
hit a double and single with Brett
Stackhouse hitting a single. Rapping
out single base hits were Scott Cox
and Glen Ditner.
Cox started on the mound for the
Brewers, with Scott Leonhardt and
Paul Dolmage coming on in relief.
They combined for six strike outs.
Dolmage of the Brewers said that
Fullarton hit the ball around on
Walton in the contest.
“An old chucker from the past
helped us out tonight for a couple of
innings,” he said. “We battled well.”

A’s beat out Brewers
Brussels drop game to Walton
The Walton Brewers scored a win
in a heart-pounding contest on June
9 against the Brussels Tigers. The
drama unfolded at the Walton Ball
Park.
After trailing for the majority of
the contest, the Tigers scored four
times in the top of the seventh inning
to take a slim 5-4 lead, but the
Brewers put two runners across the
plate in the bottom of the inning to
claim a 6-5 decision.
The Brewers scored a pair of runs
in the bottom of the first inning and
added single runs in the third and
fourth innings. Brussels put a single
run across the plate in the top of the
third.
Scott McDonald recorded 11
strike outs, going the distance on the
mound for Walton to pick up the
win. Shawn Daw started on the
mound for the Tigers and was
relieved by Dennis Dewar.
They combined for five strike
outs.
Liam Melady had a triple and
single for the Brewers with Jamie
Wicke rapping out three singles.
Barry Young connected for a double
and single with McDonald hitting a
pair of singles. Collecting one base
hit each were Adam Verkley, Shawn
Bromley and Scott Cox.
Brody TenPas and Dewar each
connected for a triple for the Tigers.
Steve Scholl, Nathan Watson and
Sean Cook each rapped out a pair of
singles with Andrew Baker getting
one single.
At the Mitchell Mets tournament,
played June 5-7, the Brewers won
their pool with three wins. They lost
out in the semi-finals to a good New
Zealand national team. Blain Marks
of the Brewers said the game against
the Tigers was a teeth-gnashing and
heart-pounding contest. He said it
wasn’t the best ending to the game
for the Brewers, but they were able
to prevail.
“The rivalry continues,” said
Marks. Daw of the Tigers said they
were able to rally at the end, but
were unable to hang on to the lead.
“It was a great contest overall,” he
said.
The Brewers played host to the
Sebringville Junior Sting on
Tuesday and then travel to Belmore
tonight (Thursday) for an 8 p.m.
contest against the Stingers. On June
23, the Brewers are in Zurich for an
8:30 p.m. contest against the
Rangers.
The Tigers were in Wingham on
June 12 for a game against the
Hitmen and then play host to the
Wingham squad on Friday at the
Optimist Ball Park in Brussels,
beginning at 8:30 p.m.
