A correction to last week’s
headline: Brussels Cemetery
Decoration service is on Sunday,
June 28. The form-up for members
is at 1:45 p.m. and the service begins
at 2 p.m. Please bring a lawn chair
for seating.
The week started with four
members of the Brussels Legion
Branch taking the Safe Food
Handling Course offered by the
Huron County Health Unit. It was
held at the Brussels Library with 24
people taking part from across the
area. Comrades Jo-Ann McDonald,
Judy Lee, Mabel Glanville and
Sandra Josling await the news if they
passed.
The Saturday afternoon euchre
had 14 tables of players. Winners
were: first, Marie and Ruth, 75;
second, George and Deanna Bacon,
72; third, Louise Hammond and
Mary McIntosh, 68; lone hands,
Eileen and Helen, Viola Adams and
Helen Dobson and Betty Hulley and
Frank, three each; low, Eleanor
Stevenson and Edna McLellan, 45.
A financial seminar was held in
Harriston Branch on Sunday.
Attending were treasurer Alicia
McDonald; president, Jo-Ann
McDonald and Zone Commander,
Eric Ross, Brussels.
The Sunday night dance had a
good crowd of 90 enjoying the
music of Tri County. We welcomed
back Mary Bradshaw, who has been
busy these past few weeks.
NEWS
FROM BRUSSELSFather’s Day approaching fast
June is scooting right along. It’s
such an exciting month with school
days coming to a close, graduations
happening, weddings in the works
and growth and renewal all about.
Oh yes, June is busting out all over
as the old song says.
Father’s Day is another happening
in June, a time to stop and think
about your life and how your father
influenced you. Heredity and
environment are great influences on
who we become and it is really
interesting to watch yourself do and
say things that could come right out
of your parents’ body. Even more
fascinating is to watch your children
do the same.
So here’s to fathers and the good
influence they have on the next
generation. If you’re free for lunch
on Friday, the Huronlea Auxiliary is
having a barbecue and would love to
see you there.
Do you ever have times in your
life when things come to a spot that
choices need to be made and all the
information is not immediately
available? Church circles are using
words like crossroads, journey,
roads, all to show that life is not
static. Choices are made every day
that guide our direction and often we
are almost unaware – brush your
teeth, read the paper, put on a coat.
Each decision helps determine the
future, the state of your teeth, your
public knowledge and your health.
How we live each day is our road to
our future.
Listening to Rev. John Buttars,
from Guelph, at Trinity in Listowel
last week reinforced all this. He was
speaking on legal assisted death,
from a retired clergy view. The
details of many deaths inspired him
to do very thorough research on the
last stages of life. When the voice of
experience tells you things that you
thought already, it’s time for a lot
more thinking.
We came away with a list of
questions and resources that help
make the subject of end of this life,
more normal and easier to plan and
talk about. We are on a journey and
we all take our own road, it’s at the
crossroads that decisions get made
that affect our days of living.
With just a little extra moisture in
the ground this week, work outside
will take a bit of a rest until the
ground dries. Watching the water
whip over the island on the way to
the dam, you knew a lot of rain had
fallen. The island is visible now, but
it’s still time for a little inside work.
Better to get it done before the warm
and sunny days lure you outside.
Enjoy June.
Bye now, Betty G.W.
