Optimists pledge $125,000 to centre upgrades
Huron East Council received some
good news at its June 2 meeting,
when the Brussels Optimist Club
pledged $125,000 over the next five
years to the proposed upgrades to the
Brussels, Morris and Grey
Community Centre.
This announcement from the club
comes after the Brussels Lions Club
and the Blyth Brussels Minor
Hockey Association both announced
their support for the project.
“We fully support the efforts in
trying to make out local arena more
user-friendly for years to come,”
Club President Vern Logan said in a
letter to council. “We are committing
$125,000 over five years to this proj-
ect. We hope this helps to gain the
much-needed grant to make this
project happen. This portion can be
included over and above the commu-
nity’s portion to help get us to the 66
per cent to maximize our chances of
getting the grant.”
As stated in the letter, council is
being encouraged to not use the
money pledged by the Optimists to
off-set the community’s portion, but
to attribute it to another portion of
the total cost.
The project, with a total projected
cost of over $1.5 million, is depen-
dant on a Canada 150 Community
Infrastructure Program grant.
As part of the cost allocation,
Huron East will commit $400,000 to
the project, should the grant be
approved. This amount is compara-
ble to a similar grant for the Seaforth
and District Community Centre, that
was approved a number of years ago.

employees may be seeing a small
raise soon as a result of a provincial
program.
Treasurer Paula Michiels told
councillors that the 2014 provincial
budget includes an investment of
nearly $270 million to support wage
enhancement for child care staff.
As dictated by the program, any
child care staff earning less than
$26.27 per hour are eligible to
receive wage enhancement of up to
$1 per hour, plus 17.5 per cent bene-
fits. There would also be an addi-
tional increase in 2016.
Michiels told council that Huron
East has five staff members who
would be eligible for the funding.
She also told councillors that staff
members have been made aware that
wage enhancement is dependant on
the provincial funding, so if it were
to dry up, the enhancement would no
longer be provided. She said that eli-
gible staff members have signed a
memorandum of understanding to
that effect.

Lavis Contracting was awarded
the tender for the asphalt paving of
Front Road, Browntown Road and
Moncrieff Road for this year.
The company’s bid of
$486,858.25 was the lowest of three
bids, followed by Armstrong Paving
at $551,634.84 and CoCo Paving
Inc. at $558,292.
Public Works Manager Barry
Mills, in his report, said that the ten-
der comes in pretty close to the
year’s paving budget, which is
$479,000.
Because expenses came in higher
than anticipated, however, a separate
paving project on Mount Pleasant
Line has been postponed until 2016.
The tender dictates that Front
Road is due to be paved between
County Road 12 and Bayfield Street,
while Browntown Road will be
paved from County Road 12 to Road
172 and Moncrieff Road will be
paved from County Road 12 to
McDonald Line.

meet. Since it is right beside the
Brussels Library, a designated her-
itage building, there will be certain
criteria that will have to be met
through a heritage impact assess-
ment, but Morton said the consulta-
tion process with the Huron County
Planning Department has already
begun.
The mayor also added that council
would be expecting a site plan
agreement, which Morton said will
also be completed soon.
MacLellan said he and council
wished Morton the best of luck
through the next steps of the process
and looked forward to seeing him
again at a future meeting where the
details of the project could be fur-
ther discussed.

read the information in the book and
present their topic to the rest of the
club. The members enjoyed learning
about steaming, microwaving, boil-
ing, stir-frying and panning veg-
etable through creative skits, poems
and demonstrations.
Members then got a chance to
executive their method. Once all the
vegetables were cooked the mem-
bers judged the cooking methods
based on appearance and taste.
Members headed outside for a
game of ball tag on the playground
while the leaders prepared the cook-
ing stations. After their break mem-
bers came in and broke into their
cooking groups. They prepared a
stir-fry, vegetable pizza, and a mari-
nated salad. Members enjoyed their
creations and Maisy Jefferson closed
the meeting with the 4-H motto. The
next meeting was scheduled be held
on June 9 at 7 p.m. at the Wingham
Community Garden.
