Communities in Blooms Ontario will be here in Auburn July 6-8 to tour our village and observe how much beauty and pride there is in our community. Karen Redmond, president of the Auburn Horticultural Society, told me how just a little more than 10 years ago when Auburn was celebrating its 150-year anniversary that people of Auburn had the village in tip-top shape. The lawns and gardens looked wonderful. There were even flags hanging from the hydro poles around the village, she reported. This year, the theme for Central Huron in Bloom is red and white and Auburn residents are encouraged to use these colours to decorate their residences and places throughout town. Redmond is hoping to have some flags ready and available for this year’s Communities in Bloom competition as well. “We are hoping the whole village will go red and white,” Redmond said. Volunteers will be painting the stones that spell out the village’s name on either side of town. Redmond said the main thing the Communities in Bloom people will be looking for is village-wide pride. These seem to be in accordance with the Communities in Bloom website which states, “Communities that look successful are most likely to be successful.” There are eight criteria the Communities in Bloom entourage will be looking for when they visit Auburn: Floral Displays, Turf and Groundcovers, Landscaped Areas, Natural and Cultural Heritage Conservation, Tidiness, Environmental Awareness, Tree/Urban Forest Management and Community Involvement. The event was folded into the Alice Munro Festival of the Short Story, which was held over the weekend at various locations throughout Huron County. Doing the honours were North Huron Reeve Neil Vincent, left, Sue Seip of the Wingham Friends of the Library, centre, and Chair of the Huron County Library Board Jim Fergusson, right. (Jim Brown photo)
