Total receipts for Brussels
Livestock for the week ending June
5 were 1,676 cattle and 590 lambs
and goats. On Tuesday fed steers
and heifers sold on a strong active
trade at prices $1 to $2 higher.
Choice steers and heifers sold $206
to $210 with sales to $217.50.
Second cut sold $201 to $206. Aged
and medium fed steers and heifers
sold $190 to $197. Cows sold
steady. On Thursday holstein veal
calves traded $2 to $5 higher. Heavy
holsteins sold steady. Lambs sold on
a good active trade, while sheep and
goats sold steady. On Friday all
cattle sold on a strong active trade
with calves selling steady and
yearlings selling $3 to $5 higher.
Chris Smith of Brussels,
consigned 14 steers that averaged
1,570 lbs. and sold for an average
price of $211.74. Two limousin
steers averaged 1,585 lbs. and sold
to Cargill Meat Solutions for
$217.50. Melvin H. Sherk of
Wellesley, consigned seven steers
that averaged 1,507 lbs. and sold for
an average price of $201.23. One
limousin steer weighed 1,430 lbs.
and sold to Norwich Packers for
$211.
Larry Reinhart Sr. of Mildmay,
consigned 10 heifers that averaged
1,314 lbs. and sold for an average
price of $205.76. Three limousin
heifers averaged 1,372 lbs. and sold
to Norwich Packers for $214. Bruce
Dale of Centralia, consigned 11
heifers that averaged 1,302 lbs. and
sold for an average price of $210.76.
Four limousin heifers averaged
1,333 lbs. and sold to Norwich
Packers for $212.50.
There were 208 cows on offer.
Export types sold $123 to $127 with
sales to $146; beef, $145 to $155
with sales to $191; D1 and D2, $115
to $125; D3, $105 to $115; D4, $85
to $105. Francis Walters of
Mildmay, consigned one black cow
that weighed 1,485 lbs. and sold for
$191.
There were 11 bulls that sold $154
to $199. John Richardson of
Harriston, consigned one blue bull
that weighed 1,790 lbs. and sold for
$199.
There were 106 head of veal on
offer. Beef sold $180 to $227; good
holsteins, $145 to $160 with sales to
$180; heavy holsteins $140 to $150.
Lamar Frey of Listowel, consigned
nine calves that averaged 909 lbs.
and sold for an average price of
$214.23. One roan heifer weighed
850 lbs. and sold for $243.
Sunnydale Acres Ltd. of Ailsa Craig,
consigned two calves that averaged
870 lbs. and sold for an average
price of $217. One limousin steer
weighed 880 lbs. and sold for
$224.
Lambs, 50 - 64 lbs. sold $272 to
$292; 65 - 79 lbs., $262 to $287; 80
- 94 lbs., $260 to $273; 95 - 109 lbs.,
$268 to $271/lb.
Sheep sold $90 to $125.
Goats: kids sold $200 to $300;
nannies, $50 to $115; billies, $150 to
$300/lb.

400 lbs., sold $342 to $390; 400 -
499 lbs., $360 to $402; 500 - 599
lbs., $334 to $384; 600 - 699 lbs.,
$315 to $325; 700 - 799 lbs., $272 to
$303; 800 - 899 lbs., $253 to $282;
900 - 999 lbs., $246 to $255; 1,000
lbs. and over, $234 to $242.

300 - 399 lbs., $330 - $375; 400 -
499 lbs., $323 to $345; 500 - 599
lbs., $312 to $340; 600 - 699 lbs.,
$313 to $330; 700 - 799 lbs., $260 to
$289; 800 - 899 lbs., $237 to $242;
900 lbs. and over, $234 to $245.
The third meeting of the
Wawanosh Ontario Fruit and
Vegetable Club was held on
Saturday May 30 at 10 a.m. at the
Auburn Hall. President Maisy
Jefferson opened the meeting with
the pledge, followed by roll call.
Members of the club then took
time to discuss their progress on the
Wingham Community Garden since
all members could not attend the
second meeting or the make-up
meeting. The members described the
work they had done in the garden
including spreading topsoil and
mulch, planting beets, onions and
potatoes as well as installing fences
for the peas, pole beans and
cucumbers.
The leaders also reminded the
members about the 100th
Anniversary Events 4-H Ontario is
hosting for members. There is a
camping weekend July 24, 25 and 26
as well as a trip to Canada’s
Wonderland on July 25.
Next, members were given a bit of
time to think of a club name. After a
few suggestions were made, a vote
was held. The Huron Harvesters was
the name chosen, and Clarissa
Gordon is to design the title page for
the member book. The leaders then
reviewed the bookwork to ensure
that the members were up to date.
Next, members broke into groups
and were each given a method of
cooking vegetables. They were to
