How do I get started with an investment plan?

A successful financial life is like taking a road trip: unless you know where you want to go, you're
not going to get there.
Just like you would plan a trip, you should map out your finances. Realizing your financial dreams
requires goals and a strategy for reaching them.
For example, do you want to save and invest for retirement, buy a home, put money aside for
your children's education? Your long-term goals should be clearly defined and realistic. Nothing
derails a financial plan faster than setting unattainable goals.
The best way to clarify goals is by assigning them dollar amounts. When you know how much
money it will take to reach your objectives, you can map out an effective savings and investment
strategy.
One good way to get where you want to go is by setting up a preauthorized contribution plan to
funnel cash into investments. Money will be transferred from a financial institution account to
investments at regular intervals.
It's also a good idea to work with a professional. A financial advisor can help define your goals
and strategy, as well as choose appropriate investments.

Walton residents mourn sudden loss of McClure
It was a very sad week around the
Walton area with the news of the
sudden and tragic death of Stan
McClure. Our sympathies are
extended to his wife Donna and
children Tina, Rob and Trisha and
their partners. Stan will be missed by
the many members of the McClure
family. Stan was the eighth child in
the family of nine. Always a smile
on his face, he loved his family time,
having fun with family and friends.
He worked for Central Huron Roads
Department and was well liked by
all. Our condolences to all.
We are happy to hear that Sadie
Ten Pas is home from hospital
following her surgery. We hope she
is improving every day and will soon
be out and about again.
Celebrating a special birthday
with her family was Clara, a sister of
Aggie Ten Pas. The four sisters,
Aggie, Clara, Alie and Martha (Van
Veen girls) enjoyed the day together
on Wednesday. It started in the mid-
morning with coffee and cookies at
Clara’s. Then they enjoyed lunch at a
restaurant and then returned to
Clara’s for more talking and more
snacks. The actual special 80th
birthday was in February, but
celebrating on a warm summer day
is much nicer. There was a special
appearance by her little four-legged
friend, Peanut, that just made the
day. Happy belated birthday Clara!
We can report that Allan Edgar is
now in Wingham Hospital
recovering from a broken hip.
Our sympathies are extended to
Bill Wright and family on the
passing of Pat. She will be missed by
her children Carolyn, Kim, Brad and
Joanne and their families and
mother, Marie Dickert. Pat was a
lovely lady who I met when she and
Bill attended the meals at the Legion
over the years. Our condolences to
all.
It was quite a surprise when a big,
black limo bus pulled up to the
Walton Ball Park on Thursday
evening. We thought it was quite a
way for a ball team to come to a
game, but found it was not the case.
The limo bus was carrying the
family of Gary Finlayson, who
happened to be celebrating his 75th
birthday. The family had gathered at
the home of daughter Karen
Braecker for a party to celebrate the
birthday. The limo came into play
due to good friends Brian and
Connie Alcock. The limo had been
hired to take the Alcock girls and
friends to prom in Clinton and had
returned to the farm to wait before
the assigned pick-up time. With time
to kill and a limo in the driveway, the
group decided to take a tour around
the area. The nearly-20 decided to
pull into the park and cause a bit of a
stir. It did and they report that it was
a beautiful ride in the limo.
Neil and Marie McGavin have had
a busy week last week. They
celebrated Neil’s birthday on
Monday evening with family
members arriving to celebrate and
then another gathering on Tuesday
evening, to celebrate their wedding
anniversary. Happy birthday and
anniversary to them.
We welcome Neil Turnbull of
Calgary back for another visit. He
attended the Lions Elimination Draw
and was even a winner! Good reason
to come home this time.
Celebrating a special birthday this
week is Nel Bentinck. She has
reached the golden age of 95 years.
She celebrated with a couple of her
friends with dinner. Happy birthday
Nel!
There was a great little clip
featuring Cinnamon Jim’s by Buzz
Reynolds on Eat Here!Jim did a
great job of explaining, preparing
and showing off the finished
featured dish. Certainly made a
person hungry! Good job Jim!
The Brussels Lions Club held a
very successful Elimination Draw on
Saturday evening with a delicious
meal for all and 28 happy winners.
The happiest being Bob Rowe and
Colleen Elliott winning the big prize
of $4,000. Walton’s Neil McGavin
sold six of the lucky tickets to area
folks. Walton winners included Sean
and Emily Mitchell, Kennedy and
Kaden Huether, Chris and Lisa
Stevenson, Steve and Julie Coulter
and Danica and Randy Zwep and
Bob and Colleen. Congratulations to
all and look for a complete list of
winners in the paper.
Congratulations to Trevor Wilson
on his marriage to Ann Gremm last
Saturday. They were married at the
VanBeek farm on St. Michaels Road.
The inside of the barn was
absolutely beautiful and amazing for
the special ceremony. The couple
went on a honeymoon to Quebec and
tour of the St. Lawrence and will
reside in Brussels. Congratulations
to Trevor and Anna.
A correction on my rugby story
last week. The F.E. Madill Junior
rugby boys went to the Barbarian
Cup, not Bavarian Cup in Fergus on
Sunday. The boys played two hard-
fought games, but lost, and in the
third game, a very experienced team,
beat them also. It was a great season.
The senior boys played in OFFSSA
last week and again had some very
good games and only lost by a point
to eliminate them from further play.
A good season for all.
Congratulations teams!
The Walton Raceway had a busy
weekend with an open practice
happening on Saturday and the races
on Sunday. The Thames Valley
Riders Race Club rented the track
and facilities for the day of racing.
The weather co-operated for two
good days on the track.
Celebrating birthdays this past
week include Amanda McClure,
Merle Hackwell, Jacob McGavin,
Sharon Stephenson, Kennedy
Strong, MacKenzie Strong, Ashley
Williamson, Bonnie Glanville, Chris
Humphries, Rob McClure, Trish
McClure, Anita Storey, Roger
Humphries, Shawna O’Neill, Nicole
Bernard, Sandra Lewington, Laura
Bowers, Joan McNaughton and
Matthew McKee. Happy birthday to
all.

Beard harvest fundraiser set
Hunger is a serious reality for
millions of people in many parts of
our world. A special Beard Harvest
will take place during the June 21
church service at Brussels United
Church. The money raised goes to
help grow food in the countries
where it is needed.
Bob Kellington has been growing
his beard since the first of May with
a goal of raising $750. Each dollar is
matched 4:1 by the government.
The beard harvest supports the
Canadian Food Grains Bank Field of
Faith Growing Project for 2015.
Receipts are issued by the Canadian
Food Grains Bank for amounts $20
and over.
Local hairstylist Janice Machan
will do the honours of harvesting the
beard during the children’s portion
of the service. How much will Bob
raise? This is still to be determined
and anyone wishing to donate can
contact him at 519-887-6591. A
dinner to increase awareness of the
Canadian Food Grains Bank, that
was held on May 17, raised $500,
which makes a total donation of
$2,500 for that event.
