Rocking the draw
The Brussels Lions Club held its annual Elimination Draw on Saturday at the Brussels, Morris
and Grey Community Centre and one of the main attractions was the band The Shananigans,
from Kitchener, which provided musical entertainment for the evening. (Jim Brown photo)

Cemetery decoration
service on June 23
By Jo-Ann McDonald
Activities around the Brussels
Legion Branch have been few this
week. The Cadet leaders met to wind
up the year-end business, to finalize
the paperwork for the Cadets going
to camp and to plan the 2015/16 year
of Cadet meetings, sport and other
activities.
The Brussels Legion sponsored
the Mitchell Legion Brass Band to
play at the Brussels Farmers’ Market
last Friday afternoon. A mixup
occurred in the advertising
somehow, so folks were surprised
when it was not the Clinton band. No
matter, the music was great and
enjoyed by all attending the market.
The Mitchell Band did a great job as
usual and thanks to leader Claire
French.
Set aside and mark your calendars
for Brussels Cemetery Decoration
service. The service is organized by
the Legion and all churches and
members of the community and
families are invited to attend. The
service recognizes all who have
passed in the last year and are buried
at the Brussels cemetery. On June
23, bring your lawn chairs and enjoy
the service, Brussels Pipe Band
playing and the flowers at their
finest. The service begins at 2 p.m.

NEWS
FROM BRUSSELS
Elimination draw a good community event
A wonderful rain is falling as I
type, making it very pleasant to
think about the past few weeks and
all that has occurred.
The Co-operative Ministry of
Blyth and Brussels United Churches
continues to develop, with a shared
worship in Blyth the last of May.
London Conference met over the
weekend and it was reassuring to
hear Ken Callahan talk about the
small, strong church being the
future. Seeing the world in real
terms and knowing that we all are
different. So after spending a
weekend talking church, it’s good to
be here.
The Elimination Dinner and Draw
was held on Saturday at Brussels,
Morris and Grey Community
Centre, a good long-time tradition of
the Lion’s Club. Community good is
the bottom line of this event where
the public show the club that they
appreciate all their work and the
club responds with an evening of
good food, entertainment and
friendship. Oh, yes everybody wins
when the vision is shared.
Life has been a little busy in the
Graber and Watson world lately.
Brother Bill and Pauline’s daughter
Lesley married Scott in Beaufort,
South Carolina on May 20. We went
with the Smith aunties, Cora and
Carol to celebrate this love. Good
weather for a lovely beach wedding,
with tiny beach balls replacing
confetti and beach towels instead of
table favours made this wedding
memorable. Swimming in the ocean
and time with brothers Clif and Bill
plus all the new and old friends
makes a very fine time. Lesley
carried the hankie that my Grandma
Jenkins carried at her wedding in
1906 and my mom carried in 1942,
so tradition was present on the
beach.
On to Halifax where Mike and Val
Watson watched proudly as son
Andrew walked the stage at the
convocation at Dalhousie University,
to receive his nursing degree. His
excellent marks gave him three
awards, as well as the Dalhousie
Medal. Poppa Ralph was pretty
proud with all the extra curricular
concerns that Andrew made time for
as well. A few days of being good
tourists, where seafood is so good
was a fun celebration of life.
Planning ahead, the village Kid’s
Korner program is scheduled for
July 13-17. This is a co-operative
ministry for children in
Kindergarten to Grade 8 that takes
the theme, “No Matter What, God
Loves Me”. So mark your calendar,
tell the kids and offer to help.
Everyone wins.
Bye now, Betty G.W.

at the Anglican Church and to all of those who
couldn’t make it but sent gifts. We greatly
appreciate all of your kind wishes and generosity.
