F.E. Madill students excel artistically, athletically
The much-needed rain finally
arrived on the weekend. Many
farmers were getting quite
concerned with the lack of moisture
causing the very uneven germination
of the crops. Hopefully, the rain and
the heat will cause everything to
jump up and even out somewhat,
until the next crisis for the farmer.
Areas around the Brussels area had
received rain before, and some areas,
torrential rain, but around here, a
nice gently pouring, continuous rain
was great.
Congratulations to Harvey Smith
on celebrating his 90th birthday on
the weekend. The Smith family
gathered at the home of a
granddaughter in Innerkip for the
weekend. All of the Smith family
were able to attend, including their
son from the Kingston area. The
families camped on the property and
had a barbecue Saturday and then
family breakfast on Sunday
morning. Harv and Marion stayed at
their daughter Brenda’s in
Woodstock for the night. Congrats to
Harv!
We send get well wishes to Sadie
Ten Pas as she is a patient in a
London hospital after having
surgery. We hope she is coming
along and will soon be home.
We hope Allen Edgar is improving
after having a fall and breaking his
hip. He is in Stratford Hospital and
we hope he is coming along and
healing well.
Our hopes for a full recovery go
out to Zak Goos as he is a patient in
hospital after being injured in an
automobile accident. He was with
some other young men, who were
not badly hurt. A severely broken leg
is among his injuries. We hope he
has a quick and full recovery.
Our condolences to Mary
Humphries on the sudden passing of
her son-in-law Bob Leatham. He
was the partner of Wenda
Humphries. Our sympathies are
extended to the family. They lived in
the Arranville area.
Many members of the family of
Jim Armstrong attended a wedding
in Cobourg on the weekend. They
went on Friday and spent the
weekend there. They attended the
wedding of grandson Andrew
Armstrong, the son of Robert and
Lynn. The crew enjoyed the
wonderful wedding festivities of
Andrew and Chauntelle and
congratulations to all.
There should be many proud
young men and parents around our
area this past week. The F.E. Madill
senior and junior boys rugby teams
both captured the WOSSA
championships recently. There are
many players on the team but local
players include Hayden TenPas,
Brock MacLean, Matt Pipe, Stuart
Higgins, Jordan Hubbard, Anden
Coultes, Austin Johnston and Dustin
Pennington on the senior team. The
team advances to the OSSA
tournament in Barrie this week.
Good luck to the team. The junior
team has local players including
Nathan Bachert, Dylan McNeil,
Dawson Coultes and Brendan. The
junior boys do not go to OSSA but
have a one day tournament in Fergus
called the Barvarian Cup. Congrats
to both teams and all the boys and
coaches and good luck in the
tournaments.
Another good reason to have many
proud area folks, is the presentation
of The Sound of Music put on by F.E.
Madill students. It was an excellent
performance by the performing cast
of almost 20 students, the amazing
musicians, about 32, of the F.E.
Madill Orchestra, directed by Eric
Varillas. The many contributions of
the numerous students of the custom
woodworking and construction
classes of the school, the students of
the hairdressing and aesthetics
classes of the school and by other
behind-the-scene students made for
a very successful production.
Local students involved as stage
performers included Courtney
Bachert, Seth Nichol, Johanna
Blake, Hayley Rehkopf, Erica
Boneschansker and Emily
Bloemberg. Orchestra members
included Chris and Leanne Exel of
Brussels. Congratulations to all.
A reminder that the 150th
Anniversary of Duff’s United will be
celebrated this week with guest
speaker Steve Hildebrand of
Egmondville. Service is at 10:30
a.m. and the time capsule of 1912
will be opened. Everyone is invited
to attend.
Celebrating birthdays this past
week include Geri-Lee Godkin,
Trevor Sutcliffe, Pat Dalton, Johanna
Blake, Adam Forbes, Rob Shortreed,
Erin Baan, Sister Teresa Ryan, Neil
McGavin, Patricia Hackwell
Andrades, Ernie Lewington, Scott
Henderson, Kyle Pryce, Scott
Dalton, Jillian Houston and Jeff Parr.
Happy birthday to all.

M-T offices slated for renovation
Morris-Turnberry’s municipal
offices will be getting a facelift this
summer, including energy-saving
lighting.
Nancy Michie, chief
administrative officer told council
that the new lighting will cut
electricity use in half as well as
improving working conditions for
staff. Workers have complained
about eye strain and headaches from
the current lighting that was
installed in 1985, she said.
She estimated savings of $1,200 a
year, paying for the estimated
$3,628 cost of the new lighting in
about three years. In addition,
painting the walls will cost $1,650
and installing new carpet will cost
$2,065. There is $4,000 in the
budget to cover the cost.

Council approved a new
agreement with South Bruce to
provide automatic aid if there is a
structure fire in an area in the north
of Morris Turnberry or the southern
area of South Bruce.
James Marshall, fire safety officer
explained that time is of the essence
in the case of a structure fire.
Having higher numbers of
firefighters on hand quickly can
knock down a fire before it can get
out of hand.
The agreement would mean that
Wingham would respond to a fire in
the designated area and, if help is
needed, it would come from South
Bruce’s Teeswater station, rather
than having to wait for firefighters
from North Huron’s Blyth station to
arrive. Wingham would reciprocate
in the case of a fire in the southern
part of South Bruce.
“We know that fire doubles in size
every minute,” Marshall said. “If we
can cut travel time down at no extra
cost it makes sense and increases the
safety of our residents.”

The paving of Clyde Line will be
completed this year with a saving
from the estimated cost in a cheaper
tender approved by council.
Morris-Turnberry jointly tendered
with North Huron and South Bruce
for surface treatment and the
municipality’s $144,88.60 share of
the total tender of $376,553.54 to
Cornell Construction Limited was
under the estimate of $150,000.

Unless an emergency comes up,
there will be no council meeting in
August. July’s meetings will be July
7 and 21, both at 7:30 p.m.
There was some discussion about
office hours for July and August
with Councillor Jim Nelemans
objecting to changes in the normal
schedule which he felt would
confuse people wanting to come to
the office.
Despite his concerns council
supported the staff plan to be open
from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with staff
rotating to cover the hours.
