Futsal club seeks
U12, U14 players
for winter season
Huron Futsal Club (FC) is looking
for the best U12 and U14 soccer
players Huron County has to offer to
join its futsal program for the new
season.
Tryouts are being held June 6 and
13 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. on the
outdoor fields in Clinton where
president and head coach, former
professional Mexican football
player Poncho Melo will be putting
together a team.
The team will train twice a week
in Huron County, once in Goderich
and once in Clinton, during the
winter season and play in the
London Futsal League whose games
are always on Saturdays.
Players born between 2001 and
2004 are welcome to come try out
for the two squads.
Summer practices will be held in
Clinton at St. Anne’s Catholic
Secondary School on Wednesday
evenings from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Club manager Annie Sparling also
said that the organization would be
looking at attending tournaments
throughout the summer before the
indoor games start.
Players are encouraged to wear
typical soccer attire for try-outs,
however Sparling said that there is
special equipment required for the
indoor game once the colder
weather comes.
“When you’re looking at soccer
footwear, there are three different
kinds,” she said. “There are cleats
for outdoor, cleats for indoor turf
and futsal shoes. We suggest getting
the latter because running shoes can
slide a lot in a gymnasium.”
Aside from the footwear, typical
soccer equipment is fine, Sparling
said.
The fees for the team have yet to
be determined Sparling said.

Not going down
Western Ontario Secondary School Athletics Association (WOSSAA) gold was hanging in the
balance when the Woodstock Collegiate Red Devils visited St. Anne’s Catholic Secondary
School Monday to take on the Eagles for the Senior Girls Rugby Championship. Shown above

provide a passing opportunity. The Eagles handily defeated their competition 71 to 7. (Denny

Intense action
Despite some impressive plays and a lot of chances, the Blyth U18 Boys weren’t able to
capitalize and ended up fighting to a 0-0 draw against the Wingham 2 team in North Huron

Equipment safety to be
reviewed by NH staff

screwheads sticking out.
“I feel, at this time, we should
really remove it,” he said.
Knott, who lives adjacent to the
trail, said that he has never seen
anyone use it and that, at this point,
the risk of someone injuring
themselves far outweighs the use it
sees.
Knott asked to have council direct
Director of Recreation and Facilities
Pat Newson to look into removing
the equipment.
“Staff are already going to assess
the site and bring that information
back to the garden group,” she said.
“We assessed the site a year ago and
adjusted it so it would be safe. Every
winter brings new changes to it.”
Newson said she wasn’t
comfortable with the idea of making
a decision prior to the report as the
current Greenway Trail committee is
transitioning into non-existence and
she wanted to try and understand
how the project would fit into the
new proposed gardening club in
Blyth.
“It’s in a state of limbo right now
and I would hate to make a decision,”
she said. “We are aware of the
problem and addressing it from a
safety perspective but we’re not
ready to give a formal report until we
talk to all the players involved.”
During the public forum period of
the meeting, Blyth resident Joe
Hallahan said he was happy council
was going to do something about the
equipment because, in his opinion, it
has been a hazard for two years.
