They had to finish their sessions from the previous week’s work. The Branch was closed for Victoria Day. Tuesday evening was the general meeting and installation of officers. Comrade Glenn Bridge installed the executive. Everyone was present for the service. Regular business was discussed. Brussels Cemetery decoration Sunday will be June 28 and we hope everyone keeps the day open. The Brussels Cemetery always looks its best that day. The service is for all members of the community to come and remember loved ones who have passed during the past years. Some housekeeping chores were dealt with by Comrades Rick McDonald and Jim Alton on the weekend. Large items headed for the dump. It is spring, so some other days will have to be found to do more of the same. It has been a nice break with a couple of weeks off from doing fish fry dinners. The Branch is gearing up again with its own fry this weekend. After a long day of garage sales, drop into the Branch to have fish for dinner. The month of June will be busy with five dinners booked, so hopefully folks are available when called upon to help. Any other members out there wanting to help or to take on more of a role on the crew can call Jo-Ann anytime. NEWS FROM BRUSSELS BUY? SELL? TRY CLASSIFIEDGetting the job done While they may be too young to drink beer, Brussels Leo Club members Trevor and Megan Exel were able, and determined, to collect bottles throughout the village on Saturday to help raise money for the club’s sports pad project near the Brussels, Morris and Grey Community Centre. To date, the club has received a number of donations from Brussels service clubs, as well as Libro Credit Union, to make the sports pad a reality. (Jasmine deBoer photo) WI learns good food choices The Majestic Women’s Institute met at Zehrs in Listowel at 1:30 p.m. for their May meeting. Marie McCutcheon introduced Amanda Mulder, nutritionist for Zehrs in Listowel and Stratford. Amanda took the members on a tour of the store. She told the members that the store items around the outside of the store are the most healthy choices in the store. Amanda demonstrated how to choose the best avocado, how to prepare it for eating and gave each member a sample to taste. The greener the lettuce is, the better it is for you. Each person should eat seven different fruits and vegetables each day to keep healthy. Choose whole fruit more often than juice. Whole fruits are filling and provide fibre, as well as vitamins and minerals. Fish should be on the menu every week. Extra lean hamburger, pork tenderloin, salmon and tuna are a good substitute for red meat. Plain yogurt can be substituted instead of mayonnaise or sour cream. Steel cut oats, oatmeal and quinoa are a good choice for breakfast. Bread products with whole grain flour as the first ingredient are healthiest as well. Amanda explained the star rating program, which is viewed beside the price of each item. She ended her tour by handing out information sheets and recommended that we try to eat healthily 80 per cent of the time and enjoy eating what you like twenty percent of the time. Marie McCutcheon thanked Amanda for her informative talk. The business meeting was held at the Trillium Insurance building in Listowel. The meeting opened with the Institute Ode and the Mary Stewart Collect. President, Yvonne Knight read a poem entitled “Pearls of Wisdom”. Leona Armstrong, secretary read the minutes of the April meeting and Marie McCutcheon, treasurer gave the treasurer’s report. It was decided to sell share the wealth tickets at the Brussels farmers’ market on June 12. Marie McCutcheon conducted a vegetable quiz and Ruth Bauer scored the highest mark. Several door prizes were handed out by Marie McCutcheon. The Institute grace was sung followed by a delicious lunch provided by Lucy Hesse, Bonnie Lindsay and Yvonne Knight.
