Kids in the Kitchen returns
Gallery seeks artists for annual community show
Quality time
Carol Sonnenburg, left, spent some quality time with her daughter Olivia on Sunday, which, of
course, was Mother’s Day. The pair decided to get some sun and soak up some of the heat at
the Blyth Lions Park to mark the special occasion. (Jasmine deBoer photo)
Summer is just around the corner,
and so is the “Kids in the Kitchen”
travelling summer day camp. Across
Huron County, six United Churches
will host the program, which teaches
children ages eight to 12 basic
cooking skills through a morning of
preparing fun-filled, healthy recipes.
But there’s more to the week-long
program than just cooking and
eating: thoughtful discussions about
where our food comes from, what is
really “healthy” food, games, stories
and more. The last day will feature a
MasterChef cooking challenge for
all participants, which will be shared
with the parents over lunch.
Additionally, the travelling day
camp is offering another program for
older youth, ages 10 to 15, called
“MasterChef: The Ultimate Diet.”
More advanced cooking skills will
be introduced and the themes and
discussions will focus on critical
thinking and exploration of current
“diet” trends such as Paleo and
veganism. To accommodate
potential summer jobs, this program
will be held in the evening at two
church sites – one at Blyth United,
and the other at Lakeshore United,
Goderich.
Both of these half-day programs
ask for a $20 donation for the week
to help cover grocery costs.
Registration is advised and
participants are encouraged to
contact the church nearest them to
attend.
Kids in the Kitchen, Travelling
Summer Day Camp will run in the
following churches.
For more information, call your
local United Church or Kathy
Douglas, head of the program, at
519-523-4380.
The camps are: July 6 – 10 at
Blyth United Church ; July 13 – 17,
Grand Bend United Church; July 20
– 24, Clinton United Church; July 27
– 31, St. Andrew’s United Church,
Bayfield; Aug. 4 – 7, Brucefield
Community United Church; Aug. 10
– 14, Lakeshore United Church,
Goderich.
The Blyth Festival Art Gallery is
looking for art hobbyists, amateur
crafters, professional artisans or
recognized visual artists to display
their work in the 2015 Community
Show. This is a great opportunity for
artists from Huron County to get
exposure to a local audience or
maybe even have a career
breakthrough.
Area residents are invited to
submit one or two pieces in any
media for the show. This is an
annual, non-juried exhibition and
features the creations of dozens of
Huron County’s professional and
hobby artists. The work will be
accepted on the morning of
Saturday, May 23. The show opens
the same evening in the Bainton
Gallery, situated in Blyth Memorial
Hall beside the Blyth Festival box
office. The exhibition runs until June
19.
Included among the pieces on
exhibit will be a wide range of
media, from oil paintings and
acrylics to photography, ceramics
and glass. Not even the show curator
is ever sure what exactly will be
shown until the artists bring in their
creations on Saturday morning.
Artists are asked to bring their
works (maximum of two) to the
gallery on Saturday, May 23,
between 9 a.m. and noon. Two-
dimensional pieces must be framed
or mounted suitable for hanging and
not exceed 36” by 36”. Free standing
sculptures must be no wider than
36”. A fee of $10 per piece is
charged, and the work will be
included in the exhibition.
Parties interested in buying a work
of art will be directed to the artist
and no commission will be charged.
All art must remain in the gallery
for the complete length of the
show and must be picked up on June
20.
The Community Show 2015 is
sponsored by Joan Perrie. The Art
Gallery is open during Blyth Festival
box office business hours.

Great Big Sea. The always popular
clowns will return for the children
with balloons and face painting.
Each ticket admits two adults and
dependent children to age 12 for a
delicious roast beef and pork dinner

The annual Elimination Draw is
one of the Clubs major fundraisers,
the proceeds of which are used to
support many worthwhile projects
within the community, such as the
club’s commitment to the Brussels
Library renovation, as well as
subsidized swimming lessons at the
Brussels, Morris and Grey pool. The
club also sponsors the Brussels Leo
Club, which will be holding the

accomplishment for this eager and
talented young group.
Only 500 tickets will be sold and,
like past years, the draw is sure to be
sold out early. Don’t be
