Band seeks members Stevenson honoured as county’s top artist Blyth artist Kelly Stevenson was shocked to learn she had been named the 2014 individual artist of the year at the Huron Cultural Awards earlier this month. “I was really surprised when they told me,” she said. “I was honoured.” Stevenson said she wasn’t as familiar with the awards as she would have liked, but she was honoured just to be nominated. “The awards are a nice thing to have because there isn’t as large a community of artists here as there are other places so there isn’t as much focus on it,” she said. “I was surprised they had picked me.” Stevenson said she was curious why she had received the nod, mostly because she felt it was likely a very difficult decision to make. “I don’t know what the process is and I’m very interested in what the general criteria is,” she said. “The artists that were named all had drastically different styles of work, so it would be hard to compare.” Stevenson said her shock was compounded when she beat out seasoned artist and former New York Times editorial cartoonist Randy Jones. “I met him during Doors Open Huron and he has done some big stuff. It’s hard to think I compare,” she said. “There was also a competitor from Exeter who works hard at making art a part of her community and I’m not sure how she didn’t win.” Stevenson chalked up her surprise to being involved in her work. “When you’re doing the work, and it’s just you and what you’re working for, it doesn’t feel as important or as great as other people might think it is,” she said. “Having this outside view and this kind of recognition is great. “When you’re painting or drawing or putting a piece together, you kind of work in a bubble and you don’t know how the rest of the world will react, so getting this award really kind of tells me my works are doing well,” she said. Currently, Stevenson is taking a break and moving her workspace indoors from the shed in which she had been working. While moving, she’s putting some thought into what her next body of work will look like. “I’ve bought some frames and I’ve been yard-saling for source material,” she said, adding that embroidery might play a significant part in her next series. The award ceremony was held on May 1 at the White Carnation Hall in Holmesville. Stevenson received a print by artist Susan Hay who brought the 2013 individual artist award home. While no one has approached her about it yet, Stevenson said that is usually how it goes. “The winner produces some prints for the winners of next year’s show which gives them something unique to give to the winners,” she said. THE EDITOR, For over 60 years, the Seaforth and District All-Girls Marching Band has been offering an enriching musical experience to the young women of Huron County. Now, we at the band are seeking new, dedicated and enthusiastic members for our organization so that we can continue to offer this same experience for years to come. We provide not only instrumental training for each girl, but also an opportunity to grow as leaders, team players and friends. The band includes brass, woodwind and percussion instruments and we practise on a weekly basis and perform in local parades throughout the year. We are looking for new members between the ages of 12 and 18. Previous musical knowledge is definitely an asset, but not a requirement. This is a great way to be involved in the community as Entertainment StopsStopsStopsStopsStops a l o n g the wayalongtheway A VISITORS’ GUIDE TO HURON COUNTY stopsalonglakehuron.com Look for entertainment ideas on our Stops Along the Way website at...430 Queen Street, Blyth, Ontario 226-523-9720 Specialty Coffees & Espresso Bar Lunches, Treats, Craft beer and Ontario wine 18th Annual Barn Dance Jamboree/Campout Weekend May 21, 22, 23, 24 ~ Blyth Campground For more information/full schedule www.thebarndance.ca 519-530-8000 Camping packages available Highlights Thursday, May 21 ~ Campground Open - Registration Friday, May 22 ~ Bluegrass Show & Open Stage 7 pm - $10 Saturday, May 23 ~ Flea Market & Silent Auction ~ Barn Dance Show/Dance 8 pm - $25 Sunday, May 24 ~ Gospel Show 10 am - $5 All events open to the public ~ arm bands/passes available at the door Doe & Doe for Joan Smith & Lisa Glanville Saturday, May 23 BMG Community Centre 9 pm - 1 am DJ, Late Lunch, Games & More Tickets: $10 ea. at the door Also available from: Pam McLean, Julie Harrison, Gale Semple, Sharon Rapson Age of majority required Happy 50th Anniversary John & Edith Pipe May 15, 2015 Love, Murray & Tara, Gary & Lori & grandchildren Ph o t o b y M a r c o n S t u d i o Graduation Kari Bell graduated in April 2015 with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Western University of London.
