Sympathies offered
to local families
It has been a sad week around the
area this past week. A former Walton
area resident, Mary (Ireland)
McCall, passed away. She will be
lovingly missed by her sons Jack and
Murray and their families. Mary was
one of the loveliest women I have
known. She will be remembered as a
lady of style, flawless manners,
delicious and bountiful cooking, her
generosity and her spirit of life.
When she moved off the farm and
went to Seaforth, she stayed very
connected with her Brussels and
Walton roots and friends. She
enjoyed attending as many functions
as she could, always coming to the
Brussels Fall Fair to visit with her
old friends and neighbours.
Mary loved to write letters and
was an eloquent writer. I have a few
letters from Mary, who never missed
the opportunity to write and
congratulate people on the happy, the
sad or the milestones in their lives. I
had a short visit with Mary, just a
month or so ago, and she was happy
in her Huronlea surroundings, but
yet was hopefully, looking forward
to going to her home for the summer.
Mary lived a very full life during her
94 years and will be missed by all
who had the opportunity to know
her. Our sympathies to her family.
Our condolences to the Clarkson
family on the passing of Trish
Clarkson. She will be missed by her
husband Ron and her three sons,
Brett, Scott, and Matt and their
families. Trish was another
wonderful lady who many will miss
around the village. She was a
dedicated mother and grandmother,
an avid supporter in their hockey
careers, a partner alongside Ron
when owning and operating the
Variety Store and a wonderful
neighbour on Frederick Street. Our
sympathies to the Clarkson and
Harvey families.
Suffering a second loss in less than
a week are Sharon Stephenson and
family. They are mourning the
passing of Sharon’s father, Kenneth
Charlie Storey. He will be missed by
his children Ken, Sharon, Don, Lois
Todd and Doreen Welsh and their
families. Charlie lived in Grey
Township and the Winthrop area and
in later years in St. Marys . He will
be missed by all. Our sympathies to
all.
Our sympathies are extended to
Deb and Carl McLellan on the
passing of her mother, Florence
Dolmage Warnes. She will be missed
by her children Deb, Larry, and Beth
and their families. Our condolences
to all.

The second coat of pavement hit
the main street of Brussels starting
last Thursday. They progressed
pretty well in the two days of work,
and it certainly looks nice. The
downtown will be back to almost
normal soon and it will just be the
north end of town that will be tied up
with the construction.
We all can recall many of our
teachers from our school days, but
how many of us can say after 75
years or more, we have lunch with
them. Back in the days of the one-
room schoolhouse, a teacher would
have all the Grades from 1-8.
George Adams tells me that every
year, for quite a few years now, he
along with another student from the
one-room school near Gorrie, Esther
King, have a special date with the
teacher. This year the teacher, Beryl
Currie, will soon celebrate her 100th
birthday and George and Esther took
her out to lunch in Listowel. They
had a wonderful time reminiscing,
as usual, and then George took the
ladies home. What a wonderful and
special memory for these three
folks.
I can relate to George’s story in a
slightly different way. We don’t
know as children how our lives will
unfold. The teachers we have had
will be remembered as some good,
some bad and some memories will
last a lifetime. It is funny how things
or fate happen. I went to school in
Mitchell and my very first teacher
was Mrs. Bryans, sister-in-law of
Jack Bryans. Who would think that
about 16 years later I would live in
Brussels and have a connection with
the Bryans family? My Grade 2, 3, 4
and 5 teachers would become
customers of mine when I began my
hairdressing career in Mitchell. My
Grade 6 teacher lives near Winthrop
and my Grade 9 teacher was Jim
Armstrong of Brussels, known as
the teacher that flies. I will admit I
don’t take Jim Armstrong out for
lunch, but I do feed him at Lions
events many times during the course
of a year. Just ask Jim, he will tell
you, I was his best student!

Keeping their balance
For some of us, maintaining our own balance can be challenging, so it’s truly impressive that
on Saturday this group was able to maintain its collective balance at the Walton Raceway’s
Challenge Course. The course had formerly been located at Benmiller Falls, but was relocated
to Walton last year. This group from Owen Sound was its first customers of the year. (Jasmine
