It seems we skipped spring and
went right into the hot summer
weather. We won’t complain, but it
is hard to know what to put on in the
morning. But we are Canadians and
should be used to the ways of our
changeable weather.
I have enjoyed a few hours out in
my flowerbeds and hopefully can
continue to get them done. The darn
grass seems to want to encroach into
the beds and edging, digging,
pulling and more digging goes on
and on. I have tried to make my
flowerbeds all perennial beds, and I
guess grass is a perennial, but the
unwanted kind! We will just keep
working at it.
Mother’s Day has traditionally
been the day we do my mom’s
flowerbeds. We managed to get the
weeds pulled, but no plants put in.
There will be another day! Happy
Mother’s Day to all! We hope
everyone enjoyed their time with
family.
A lovely sign of spring greeted my
eyes on Thursday last week. The
beautiful provincial flower, the
trillium, made its appearance. The
lovely white blooms appeared along
the sides of the roads and throughout
the bushes I see every day. They are
so pretty!
A correction to the headline of last
week’s article. The housing boom
seems to have hit Brussels not
Walton. As the Walton
correspondent, you would think I
would be talking about Walton, but
in this case, it was Brussels. I will
have to be more specific, but I knew
what I was writing about! Things in
Walton haven’t changed much over
the winter, but there are a few houses
for sale.
Isn’t it amazing what a week of
good weather can do in the world of
farming? Planting began in earnest
with corn starting about May 1.
Now, only 10 days later, driving by
field after field, you can tell they
have been planted in either corn or
soybeans. All the land within sight
of our house has a crop planted, and
that’s about 1,000 acres.
Some big farm operations, have
been using the corn planter steady,
almost day and night, for days! The
ground is dry and could use a rain,
and then some fellows could use the
rest!
The Winthrop ladies who gather to
celebrate birthdays, or just to gab,
met at the Walton Inn on Tuesday
morning.
The group celebrated the May
birthday without the May birthday
girl Carol Reinink, who is a very
busy at her greenhouse, Sunset
Springs. The ladies only had the six
ladies present, including the ring
leader Karen Braecker, Jeanette
Robinson, Judy Beuerman, Yolanda
Gubelman, Jennifer Vellinga and
Brenda Bernard. The ladies enjoy
breakfast and catching up with one
and other.

Getting a boost
Walton was the home of co-operation and team building on
Saturday as the Walton Raceway’s Challenge Course,
formerly located at Benmiller Falls, had its first customers of
the season, a group from Owen Sound. Here, members of
the team help a young lady get over the wall and into the
arms of more of her fellow teammates. (Jasmine deBoer photo)
