Madill students triumph at Goderich invitational
The F.E. Madill Secondary School
track and field team hosted an
invitational meet on May 5 in
Goderich.
With nearly 1,000 athletes from 28
schools attending, several of the
events proved highly competitive.
The Madill athletes rose to the
challenge claiming 28 individual
personal bests and three relay team
bests.
The team also earned 11 first-
place finishes, 13 second-place
finishes and 13 third-place finishes.
At this meet the Grade 7 and 8
athletes ably joined the ranks of the
Madill high school athletes and
competed in special events for their
age division.
They also earned several top
finishes with Rachel Van Stuvenberg
winning long jump and placing
second in high jump, Hannah
Bloemberg earning two second place
finishes in the 100-metre dash and
long jump, and Hannah Van
Stuyvenberg and Breelle Shaw
earning a first- and second-place
finishes, respectively, in discus.
The 4x100-metre relay team of
Jaime Newell, Mercedes Potter,
Emma Jackson and Hannah
Bloemberg connected smoothly on
their baton exchanges to win first
place.
In the Midget division, Jessica
Johnston won the sprint hurdle event
in addition to a second place finish
in high jump.
Taylor Montgomery and Jasmine
Vader, the throwing duo, once again
made their presence felt in shot put,
discus and javelin earning several
first- and second-place finishes
between them.
On the track, the Midget girls
4x100-metre relay team continued to
improve their time cutting over a
second off with their efficient
exchanges and winning third place.
In the Junior division, Sydney
Wightman continued to shine in the
discus winning the event with a new
personal best distance of 26.26
metres. Ben Newell hurled the
javelin 42.30 metres to win gold and
improved his discus throw with
44.70 metres to win the silver. Ben
Newell also topped the bar at 1.60
metres to win second in high jump.
The junior boys relay team of
Brandon Murray, Ben Newell, Mitch
Ward, and Cody Westecott
connected with their exchanges to
earn third place overall. It is
noteworthy that Ward ran the relay
with a heavy cast on his hand but
still connected on the exchanges and
ran well for his team.
Despite a back injury, Karissa
Schiestel achieved a new personal
best distance when she threw the
implement 25.77 metres to win the
bronze position (third). The senior
boys had some impressive
performances with Lyndon Smith
sprinting over the 110-metre hurdles
to a first place finish.
Smith also placed well in the
horizontal jumps. Justin McKague
continued to win at the high jump
event after claiming first place at the
last two meets he attended.
The open boys 4x400-metre race
team of Lyndon Smith, Michael
Schraa, Matthew Darrell and
Landon Anderson-Johnston also
ran strong laps to clinch third
place.
The meet was the final preparation
before the Huron Perth
Championships held in Goderich
May 12-13.
