The hot weather arrived and it means the Brussels Legion Branch will soon become very busy with fish fry dinners. Hopefully Comrades will have time to help at the events when called. The Branch had another fairly large event at the Trinity United Church in Listowel last week. They fed 340 people. Comrades helping the Branch were Glenn Bridge, Deb Cann, Daisy Wong Schmidt, Bob and Monica Richardson, George Adams, Linda Bird, Judy Lee and Jo-Ann McDonald. Great job by the crew! The next fry is at our own Branch at the end of the month. A reminder to any ex-service members and veterans who need an appointment with the Provincial Service Officers, to contact Branch Service Officer Mabel Glanville to make arrangements for an appointment as soon as possible. The Growing Forward initiative held a seminar at the Branch on Friday with a dozen or so folks taking the course. They will hold a second session this week on Friday. NEWS FROM BRUSSELS Get information on Huron County attractions on the Stops Along The Way section of our website www.northhuron.on.ca The love was aflowing on Sunday as mothers were saluted in various forms. Each mother is different, just as each child is unique and so the expressions of love were delivered in many ways. The cards from daycare, the dandelions in a jar, the coupons for toilet duty or hugs, the washed car, the restaurant meal, the spring bouquet and a big hug are all saying the same thing – I love you Mom. Miss Avery Cochrane made her name known on Sunday as she patiently let Rev. Gary Clark baptize her. While admiring relatives and friends looked on, Samantha and Adam’s lovely daughter was welcomed to the United Church of Canada by the Brussels congregation. Meanwhile the guitar choir showed their varying abilities, with Rev. Gary as the lead as they accompanied the congregation in three well-known songs. If you have a hankering to learn where the strings of a guitar belong, lessons at the United Church will begin again in the fall. As we pass through this life we all have unique variables that affect how our journey goes. As I age, the choices that are made and the public attitude to the journey are important to watch. All choices are hard, but when made and carried through, the journey progresses. Life is not a comparison, but a gift, and how we accept that gift is our decision alone. As age increases and health fails, the choices can be tough. But it is the journey that is ours each day, until this part is done. The next leg of the journey is an unknown mystery, but for now we have today. When someone dies, we think, “how would I handle that?” and “what would my family do?” and that too, is a personal trip. So as we observe life and death, we carry our own memories of that person. This past week Trish Clarkson died. At 5Rs she was one of the recycling queens. She regularly volunteered at the store over the years and when I think of Trish, I go to ideas, compassion, energy and smiles. She was often in the store when we had folks in helping tear down boxes and other duties. With her wonderful smile and attitude on recycling, the other volunteers did their jobs so much better. So one of our recycling queens is gone, but she left our community with a good example of living life. This is Nurse’s Week, so thank one. You never know when you might need them badly. Enjoy the spring weather.
