as additional storage space. Hang
frequently used tools, such as rakes
and shovels, on the inside of the
doors so they will always be easily
accessible.
You also can repurpose storage
solutions designed for other areas of
the home. For example, magnetic
knife holders can be mounted to a
shed wall to keep paintbrushes
organized. These holders also can be
used to keep many small metal tools
tidy. Metal funnels can hold twine
and string. Thread through the
narrow end of the funnel for a handy
dispenser.
Keep dangerous substances off the
floor and out of reach. Gasoline,
chemical fertilizers and other
potentially dangerous substances
should be stored high up to keep pets
and children safe.
Make sure the shed floor is sturdy
and level. This makes it easier to
neatly store larger items. Roll in the
lawnmower, wheelbarrow and any
other cumbersome items. Now that
more things are mounted vertically,
you should find that you have more
area to move around.
Taking the time to clean and
organize a shed can help make
anyone more productive.

structure.
“We want to try and assist and
ease the pain and expense of the
property,” he said. “The hope is that
if we do that, the people who are
signing on will maintain the
properties for a long time.”
He said that the same was true of
people who bought homes.
“We want people who buy the
homes to realize that there has been
pride put into it them and continue
that,” Hoy said.
Heritage designations allow
people to view the way things were
in the past, which Hoy said is a
perfect window into a time when
things were built to last, but built to
last with the proper maintenance.
“People feel that maintenance free
is the way to go when they are
building homes or renovating,” he
said. “Old homes aren’t built that
way, and changing them to that way
can actually cause damage.”
Hoy pointed to his own home as
an example where a wooden porch
was covered with aluminum. The
aluminum didn’t need painting or
much maintenance, but actually
resulted in a moisture build-up that
attracted carpenter ants.
“When you cover up the original
work, you hide problems that you
won’t find until you have to replace
those ‘no-maintenance’ options,” he
said. “Then you could end up
spending more money fixing them
then you would have just painting
the porch every few years.”
Anyone interested in applying for
a designation can also come to the
committee for help with the process.
“Essentially, you approach your
local heritage committee, they visit
the property, review what the
homeowner thinks is significant and
then make a decision,” he said.
“After that, you fill out the
paperwork, which we can help with,
and your property is designated if
the host municipality approves it.”
Hoy said the committee is happy
to help with that work because the
final document is legally binding, so
it needs to be done properly.
If all the benefits, however, are
still not enough to make the
maintenance worthwhile, Hoy said
there is always a last resort for
designated properties.
“We don’t like to advertise this,
but in the rare situation where
someone isn’t able to work within
the rules, they can apply for a de-
designation.
“It only really happens where new
owners have come in, but that can be
done,” he said.
Heritage designations aren’t just
limited to buildings or architecture,
Hoy said, pointing to historical sites
or rare natural phenomena as
examples.
“If you have a rare tree or a home
that isn’t necessarily interesting
from an architectural standpoint but
something historical did happen
there, it can be designated as well,”
he said.
As for where to start, Hoy said that
having some historical information
is necessary when applying for a
designation and there is no better
place than the Huron County Land
Registry Office.
By calling ahead and visiting the
office on North Street in Goderich,
all the information about who has
owned a property and what
structures have existed on it can be
found.

sprinklers.When choosing where
to put down your sprinklers, hook
them up to your hose, turn them on
and then watch to see where the
water is going. Areas that exposed to
sun are most in need of water, so
make sure the bulk of your water
isn’t going to shaded areas beneath
trees. In addition, make sure you
aren’t wasting water on sidewalks,
patios and driveways. Sprinklers
should be positioned so none of the
water they’re shooting out is landing
on surfaces that don’t need water. It
sounds simple, but too often
homeowners drop their sprinklers
down, turn them on and then walk
away without waiting to see where
the water is landing. Position
sprinklers or adjust sprinkler heads
so all the water is landing on your
lawn.
Keeping a lawn lush and green at
the height of summer requires
homeowners to adopt effective
strategies. Such a strategies can

Purchase quality seeds.
Use fresh seeds,
particularly ones that have
been harvested from your
own garden the year before,
to have the best chances for germination. Or buy
seeds from a reputable source like a garden
centre which specializes in vegetable seeds.
