Walton housing market strong as homes switch hands
It is official that spring is here!
The ground is being worked, land is
being sprayed, manure is being
spread and crops are being planted.
Forage, grain and corn have been
planted this past week as field after
field has machinery working in it.
Our family grew by one early on
Monday morning. Rick and I now
have our fourth grandchild to love
and spoil. Scott and Alicia
welcomed Wes to their family and
big sister Brea can’t stop saying my
“My baby Wes.”
Our sympathies are extended
again to Edna McLellan and her
family on the passing of her bother-
in-law, Mervyn Kritzer. He was from
Listowel and our condolences to his
family.
It is great to see our neighbour girl
back on Ontario soil again. Danica
Zwep has returned from a six-month
work experience in Ireland. She
travelled there with Rebecca
Trischler – a friend from Georgian
College. They both applied for a
program called “Swap” through the
University of Guelph. They obtained
a working visa through this program
which allowed them to travel to
Ireland and work there.
Danica and Rebecca flew first to
Munich, Germany to experience a
true Oktoberfest and then off to
Prague and Berlin for more
sightseeing. Upon their arrival in
Ireland, Danica was able to find
work at a ladies’ retail store “Carraig
Donn” in Galway. This store
specialized in ladies’ clothing,
jewellery and giftware. They
managed to find a house to stay in,
which they shared with two other
students attending school there.
During the six months, Danica
was able to travel and has seen most
parts of Ireland. Highlights included
hiking mountains in Kilarney, Ring
of Kerry, kissing the Blarney Stone,
Giants Causeway, Aaron Islands and
meeting wonderful friends.
They both received many visitors
in the six months there and Rebecca
has decided to stay there for the time
being. Danica highly recommends
Ireland as a place to visit and is so
grateful for the experience she
obtained there. Welcome home
Danica!
Our get well wishes go to Ruth
Schade Sauve who is a patient in
Seaforth Hospital. We hope she is
improving.
George Jutzi is also a patient in
Seaforth Hospital and we hope he is
coming along.
Our condolences to the family on
the passing of Brian Somerville. He
will be missed by his spouse Pat and
his children Alyshia, Jamie and
Jeremy. Brian was formerly of
Walton area and had resided in
Hensall. He will be missed by his
brother Paul and sister Sharon and
the extended Somerville and Stewart
families. Our sympathies to all.
It seems there is a boom of houses
being sold around the village. There
are many homes lately that have
changed hands (or will) including
the Willis home, the Langlois house,
the former Gibson house and the
Somers property. We hope all the
new owners in the next few months,
will settle nicely into this great
community.
Our sympathies are extended to
Sharon Stephenson and Corrina and
Chantelle on the passing of Sarah
Stephenson. She will be missed by
the Stephenson and Cruickshank
families. Sarah will be remembered
for her working years at CKNX and
her many years singing in the United
Church Choir. Our condolences to
all.
Our family has had the western
relatives here over the past week or
so. Karin McDonald was in the area
for about five days and has returned
from Calgary. She just left when
Neil from Vancouver arrived to stay
for about three weeks. He has been
helping with field work with the
McDonald men as well as his own
matters with his property in
Bayfield.
Our condolences to the Toll family
on the loss of Marie Toll. She will
be missed by her children Cheryl,
Vaughn, Kerry and Avon. Many will
remember Mrs. Toll as a teacher at
the Walton School. She was a stern
teacher, but she was loved by all her
students. She loved to come back to
Walton and loved to meet former
students at events in the community.
She will be missed by all. Our
sympathies to her family.
With the first of May, it’s time to
celebrate the May babies. Birthday
wishes go to Chris Holmes, Hayden
Kelso, Chad McCallum, Donnie
Williamson, Judy Valley, Bev Fraser,
Mitchell Godkin, Lori Nolan,
Annelies Ringgenberg, Kendra
Cardiff, Wes McDonald, Justin
Bernard, Andrea Humphries, Eaden
Linton, Joe Ryan, Veronica
Grobbink, Emma Robinson,
Cameron Kale, Pat Melady, Armand
Roth, Gerry Sullivan, Brian
Workman and Scott McNaughton.

A winner in the family
The annual Last Light Photo Show in memory of former Citizen reporter Sarah Mann was held
over the weekend in Goderich and current Citizen reporter Denny Scott, left, was one of this
year’s winners. Scott’s picture of the Fire Department of North Huron fighting a fire north of
Blyth won the judges’ hearts in the Working in Huron category. From left: Scott; Colleen
Maguire, who won in the After Sunset category; Lynne Mann; Tracy Meurs, who won in the
Colour Blue category; Steve Mann and Jessica Mann. Absent was Robert Kelly, the winner of
the 12 and under category. The exhibit runs until May 19 at the Goderich Library. It is an annual
fundraiser for Community Living Central Huron. (Shawn Loughlin photo)
Brussels to host micro-summit
This June, Brussels will be the site
of a micro-summit called
Reclaiming Vintage Main Street
featuring Dr. Christopher Cooper of
Edifice Atelier.
Cooper will be carrying out two
such summits. The first will be at the
Brussels Business and Cultural
Centre on June 12 and the second
will be in Annapolis Royal, Nova
Scotia on Aug. 21.
On Cooper’s website, he says that
both mall culture and the “big box
experiment” have failed and that
many Canadian small towns are now
priding themselves on shopping
locally and creating a tourist
attraction town based on quaintness
and architectural beauty.
The summit, he says, is aimed at
business owners, property owners,
architects, designers, developers,
contractors, neighbourhood historic
preservation groups, municipal
revitalization organizations and
municipal, provincial and federal
agencies.
The one-day “intensive” summit
will focus on a number of things,
including townscaping, basic
shopfront design and barrier-free
design as well as a number of other
areas.
Cooper says that through the
summit, as well as his work as a
professional consultant, he can
unlock a town’s potential.
The summit runs from 10:30 a.m.
to 3:30 p.m. with a lunch break. The
cost is $150 per person (HST
included).
