Farmers’ Market set for May 15 grand opening
Remembering. Respect.
Impressive. Dignity. Quiet.
Relationships. It’s Monday and the
CTV production of the Liberation of
the Netherlands ceremony has just
finished. All those things went
through my mind as I watched. Pride
in Canada for services rendered,
gratitude for the Netherlands for not
forgetting and hope for the future as
a young choir from Victoria sang.
All this was portrayed to me in just
watching from afar.
It was a time of equality, as the
children, showing the diversity of
Canada sang in Dutch, then a
wonderful rendition of In Flanders
Fields. To me it seemed so fitting
that this was celebrating the
diversity of the world, not the racial
supremacy that was the other side of
the war. Seventy years ago the world
was changed.
A busy bunch was seen at the
Butterfly Garden by the dam on
Saturday. The Horticulture Crew
came armed with shovels and hoes
as the weeds of the gardens were
removed. A like-minded group, they
chatted about flower names, weed
remedies and plants to be obtained.
So on a lovely day, the work was
accomplished.
The Market Board and vendors
met last week in the library to review
details of the opening day, May 15.
Stalls/spaces have been rented,
entertainment plans reviewed,
suggestions heard and details nailed
down. Rene Richmond is the
manager and reminded folks that the
grant money is gone and that the
market needs to be self sufficient.
Special events and music take
money to supply and ideas for
paying for these were reviewed.
Weekly opportunities for the public
to donate were discussed and noted
as very important in the long term.
Mother’s day is next week, so be
sure to check on your dear mother. A
visit or a flower is always welcome.
The Auxiliary of Huronlea is
offering lunch on Friday. To
celebrate mothers, as well as
increase the social life of the
residents, the volunteers are ready to
serve you some good food. Just pop
in around noon for a visit and food.
Sarah Stephenson died last week.
One of the church ladies of Brussels
United, Sarah did her part over many
years in service to church and
community. A social lady who
enjoyed the food and fellowship that
went with community building.
Stories that I equate to Sarah would
include the Rebecca Lodge, her role
in the Barn Dance troupe in the early
years or helping with the cleaning
and laundry when Doc Myers had
the birthing place across the road
from her home. So with cleanliness,
service and music as part of the
memories, goodbye dear Sarah.
The growth of spring is a miracle –
see it and enjoy.
Bye now, Betty G.W.

A NOTE FROM BETTY
A familiar sight
The north end of Brussels’ Main Street is under construction is once again going to make
getting around the village a little bit tougher. Sidewalks closer to the commercial district in
Brussels are also currently under construction. Work on the sidewalks should be done soon,
while work in the north end of the village will be done by late July. (Denny Scott photo)
At the Branch
Branch general elections held
By Jo-Ann McDonald
The general meeting and elections
were held last Tuesday evening.
There were eight Comrades present.
The regular business was dealt
with reports heard. The Branch
Veterans Service Officer Mabel
Glanville reports that Provincial
Veterans Service Officer Kim Dolan
will be visiting the area in June.
Veterans, widows of veterans or
family members of veterans needing
an appointment with her need to
contact Comrade Mabel by May 22
for information or an appointment.
The elections were conducted by
Comrade Glenn Bridge. The
following Comrades will fill the
positions of Branch 218’s executive
for the upcoming 2015/16 year:
President, Jo-Ann McDonald; First-
Vice President, Andy Overholt;
Second Vice-President, Rick
McDonald; secretary, Sandra
Josling; treasurer, Alicia McDonald;
Sergeant-At-Arms, Lisa Glanville;
executive members Judy Lee, Lisa
Glanville, Mabel Glanville, Eric
Ross and Nanci Ducharme.
The installation of the executive
will be held on May 19, a correction
from the coming events listed last
week.
This week celebrates the 70th
anniversary of VE Day or the
Victory in Europe of the Second
World War. Over 175,000 soldiers of
the First Canadian Army, plus other
Allied Forces, pushed the Nazis out
of the Netherlands. The Dutch
celebrate every year the Liberation
by the Canadian soldiers of Utrecht
on May 7, 1945.
The immediate post-war
experiences saw many Dutch
families find new hope in Canada, as
their war ravaged homeland offered
little in the way of opportunity. It is
estimated over 150,000 Dutch
people including 2,000 war brides
immigrated to Canada in the two
decades following the war. Many
Dutch people have a deep emotional
connection with Canada in the fact
that a foreign country would come in
and assist their nation when in need.
There were televised services to
celebrate the anniversary and we
hope folks watched with their
children and celebrated the roll
Canadians played in the Liberation
of the Netherlands. It was a
celebration for those who sacrificed
for their nation and for those who
survived, and for those who have
been forever grateful to Canada in
their time of need. It was a time to
pause and “We will remember
Them”.
The Cadet Drill team has been
practicing non stop for the last week.
Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday and
Sunday last week. Their competition
is on the weekend.
The fish fry crew went to
Londesborough to cook for the Lions
Club for the biggest fry we do for the
year. The crew of a dozen Comrades
cooked for just over 525 diners.
What great support for the Lions
Club! Comrades of the Branch
helping included Rick, Neil, Jo-Ann
and LeeAnn McDonald, Jim Brown,
Sandra Josling, Dan Byersbergen,
Ron Schmidt, Lloyd, Mabel
and Sharon Glanville, and Judy
Lee.
The Sunday night dance had a
crowd of 63 people to enjoy the
music of the Tri Country Band.
Good weather brings out the crowd
and they had a great time dancing.
